In the opening One Day International between India and New Zealand at Auckland on October 4, fast bowler Gurnoor Brar produced a sensational piece of athleticism off his own bowling. For a tall fast bowler operating at pace, bending low and reacting to a fierce drive in the follow-through is among the hardest skills in cricket. Brar turned the difficult chance into an effortless highlight, dismissing Tom Latham caught and bowled after the batter had crawled to 3 runs off 11 deliveries.
Brilliant one-handed reflex in the sixteenth over
The breakthrough came on the final delivery of the 16th over bowled by Gurnoor Brar. The seamer pitched the ball up full outside the off stump, coaxing Latham into playing a feeble drive. Instead of finding the turf, the ball popped up into the air toward the bowler. Reacting instantly, the Indian pacer stuck out his left hand, and the ball stuck cleanly in his palm. The one-handed grab ended Latham's stay at the crease and dealt a severe blow to the home side's top order.
Latham's ability to anchor an innings and dominate bowling attacks once settled is well recognized, making his early departure crucial. Following his dismissal, New Zealand were reduced to 84 for four in 17 overs.
Delayed toss and bowling choice under cloudy skies
The start of the contest was affected by damp weather in Auckland. Passing showers left the outfield wet, causing the toss to be delayed by 20 minutes. Upon winning the toss, Indian captain Shubman Gill chose to field first. While the ground preparations pushed the actual start of play back by 10 minutes, match officials managed to stage the full game without any reduction in overs.
An inexperienced Indian pace attack steps into the spotlight
India entered the encounter with a significantly revamped and raw fast-bowling unit. Alongside Gurnoor Brar, the pace battery featured Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi, and Arshdeep Singh. Combined, the four pacers held an aggregate experience of just 29 overs coming into the contest. Frontline options Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna were sidelined due to injuries, while Mohammed Siraj was excluded from the playing eleven despite taking four wickets in the second unofficial Test. This five-match ODI assignment follows India's 3-2 victory in the five-match T20 series, and will lead directly into a two-match Test series between the two nations.
