India suffered a worrying moment in the first ODI against England when captain Shubman Gill limped off the field after being troubled by a right hamstring injury. The setback came at a time when Gill was batting in fine touch and looked set for a big innings.
A key century stand with Shreyas Iyer
Gill had built an important century partnership with fellow batter Shreyas Iyer, putting India in a strong position in the match. Both batters looked in good rhythm and the Indian innings was progressing well before the captain's injury changed the mood in the middle.
First signs of trouble in the 24th over
Soon after completing his half century, Gill felt discomfort in his right leg muscles at the start of the 24th over. The team physio rushed onto the field to attend to him. After getting some relief, Gill resumed batting and continued his innings.
Pain worsened in the 26th over, forcing him off
After facing a few more balls, Gill was troubled again during the 26th over, and this time the pain was far more severe. He was struggling to even stand properly. The physio returned to the middle once more, but the injury proved serious enough that Gill had to walk off the ground. As he made his way back to the dressing room, the Indian captain could barely walk properly, deepening the concern within the Indian camp.

Shubman Gill eventually retired hurt after scoring 80 runs. News of the Indian captain's exit spread quickly as he left the middle of the ground due to the injury. Gill's innings had been impressive, but the injury has now created fresh concerns for Team India in this ODI.
