Following a disappointing exit from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, the Indian women's cricket team is ready to return to action with a renewed focus. The team is set to compete against England in a high-profile Test match at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground. As the squads prepare to step onto the field this Friday, the atmosphere is electric, as this match marks a significant milestone in women's cricket at the legendary venue, famously known as the 'Home of Cricket'.
A Historic Venue After 142 Years
This upcoming match takes place exactly 142 years after the first men's Test match was hosted at Lord's. The early exit from the T20 World Cup has allowed the Indian squad additional time to refine their preparations. The team has been training intensively at the Wormsley Cricket Ground. Amol Majumdar, the head coach, emphasized how enthusiastic the entire team is about the prospect of playing at Lord's for the first time. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and wished all those associated with the match the best for a successful event.
Preparation and Team Dynamics
Coach Majumdar remarked that representing India in a Test match at Lord's is a dream come true for any player. He noted that every member of the squad would feel a deep sense of pride when donning the white jersey on such an iconic stage. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who opened the batting in the previous Test against Australia, are expected to take the crease again. Priya Punia has been called into the side to replace the injured Pratika Rawal, who batted at number three during the defeat to Australia. India holds a strong recent record against England, having won three of their last four meetings, and notably, India has never lost a Test match on English soil.
England's Squad Adjustments
On the other side of the pitch, the England team, which finished as the runners-up in the recent T20 World Cup, has introduced five new players to their Test lineup: Alice Capsey, Tilly Corteen Coleman, Mady Villiers, Grace Potts, and Ellie T. This Test match will also serve as an emotional farewell for Tammy Beaumont, the opening batter who has decided to retire from international cricket following the game. Beaumont, who is only the second English female cricketer to score centuries across all three formats, notably recorded a double century at Trent Bridge during the 2023 Women's Ashes.
