Cummins has channeled his complete focus towards preparing for the demanding Test series against South Africa, a strategic decision that could see him sit out some or all fixtures of the Zimbabwe tour.
The Upcoming Zimbabwe ODI Fixtures
Australia is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe in September. These matches are slated for September 15, 18, and 20. Following this assignment, the team will travel to South Africa for a series featuring both limited-overs fixtures and traditional Test matches. Cummins has indicated that across these total six ODI matches, he may feature in a maximum of only two or three games.
Prioritizing Red-Ball Preparations
Following Australia's swift two-day victory over Bangladesh in the second Test, Cummins emphasized that his primary focus remains firmly set on red-ball preparation. He explained that the team's frontline fast bowlers could be granted brief spells away from bowling duties, though their physical conditioning and gym routines will continue uninterrupted. Bypassing the Zimbabwe matches could afford him an extra week of valuable preparation time.
Limited ODI Appearances for Cummins
Cummins has maintained a sparse presence in ODI cricket for quite some time. Ever since leading Australia to victory against India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad, he has featured in just two matches in this format. In the interim, players like Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, and Josh Inglis have taken turns captaining the Australian ODI side. Nevertheless, Cummins retains his official status as the team's ODI skipper.

Alongside Cummins, fellow pace spearheads Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are anticipated to play in the ODI series against South Africa. Although he experienced occasional discomfort in his big toe during the Darwin Test, both he and his pace colleagues bowled extensively across both matches. Restricting Bangladesh to totals of 64 and 95 in Mackay ensured that the bowlers did not have to endure an excessive physical workload.
The South African Leg and Historical Context
The ODI series against South Africa concludes on September 30 in Potchefstroom. Subsequently, Australia will play a two-day warm-up match at the same venue on October 3 and 4 before traveling to Durban for the opening Test match of the series. This tour holds profound significance for Australia, marking their first Test series on South African soil since the infamous ball-tampering controversy of 2018. While Australia traveled to the country for white-ball series in 2020 and 2023, a planned Test tour could not materialize. A scheduled Test series in 2021 was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
