India's domestic red-ball calendar is set to kick off next month with Duleep Trophy 2026 starting on August 23. Ahead of the tournament opener, the East Zone selection committee has announced its official squad. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has been appointed as the captain, while 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been surprisingly handed the vice-captaincy role. The decision comes even as the squad features seasoned international and domestic stalwarts, including fast bowler Mohammed Shami and opening batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran, who will play purely as squad members.
Duleep Trophy 2026 Format and East Zone Leadership Setup
The upcoming edition of the Duleep Trophy will feature six zonal teams competing for the title: East Zone, West Zone, North Zone, South Zone, North East Zone, and Central Zone. Squads for West Zone and East Zone have been confirmed first, with the opening fixture scheduled for August 23. What stands out in the East Zone squad is the leadership hierarchy. Despite having senior international players such as Mohammed Shami, Mukesh Kumar, and veteran first-class opener Abhimanyu Easwaran in the setup, the selectors opted for a youthful leadership group by pairing captain Ishan Kishan with vice-captain Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi's First-Class Track Record
Vaibhav Suryavanshi has remained in the headlines following his recent international debut for Team India. While his bat remained quiet during his initial outings against England, he bounced back strongly with runs on the tour of Zimbabwe. However, his record in first-class red-ball cricket remains modest. Across 8 first-class matches and 12 innings so far, Suryavanshi has managed to score just 207 runs at an average of 17.25 and a strike rate of 90. Out of those 12 innings, he has registered only a single half-century, falling cheaply on most other occasions.
Debate Over Vice-Captaincy Duty for a 15-Year-Old
The appointment of a 15-year-old as vice-captain in a major first-class tournament has triggered a debate among cricket enthusiasts and analysts. Questions are being raised on whether social media popularity and limited-overs potential should dictate leadership roles in traditional multi-day cricket. While Suryavanshi is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket, giving him the vice-captaincy responsibility over experienced first-class leaders in the squad remains a talking point ahead of the tournament.
