In a significant development in Chhattisgarh's Ambikapur, the local police have arrested a student leader associated with the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) in connection with the suicide of a nineteen-year-old college student. The arrested individual has been identified as Gyan Tiwari, who now faces charges of abetment to suicide following intense allegations from the victim's family.
Tragic Discovery in Patpariya
The victim, Antara Shah, was a first-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) student at the local PG College in Ambikapur. Originally hailing from the Chirimiri Godripara area situated in the MCB district, she had moved to Ambikapur to pursue her higher education. While living in the city, she resided at her sister's house in the Patpariya locality. According to reports from the household, she had returned from her college classes on September 10, consumed her dinner with the family, and retired to her room to sleep. However, on the morning of September 11, her family noticed her absence from her bed. Upon searching the residence, they discovered her lifeless body hanging from a window frame inside the home's washroom.
Allegations of Blackmail and Harassment
Following the devastating incident, the deceased student's close friends and family members stepped forward to level serious accusations against the NSUI student leader, Gyan Tiwari. They claimed that Tiwari had gained access to some of the victim's highly private chat messages and personal video recordings. Leveraging these sensitive materials, he allegedly subjected her to relentless harassment and threatened to expose the contents to her family members. The family asserted that the constant psychological pressure and torment inflicted by this systematic blackmailing ultimately drove the young student to take her own life.
Political Suspension and Police Investigation
As public outrage grew over the student's death, the Gandhinagar police station initiated a formal investigation. Based on the formal complaint lodged by the bereaved family, law enforcement authorities registered a case and subsequently took Gyan Tiwari into custody. Alongside the arrest, the police also seized the mobile phone belonging to the deceased student for thorough forensic examination to retrieve evidence of the alleged chats and threats. Simultaneously, the political fallout was swift; the District Congress President took decisive action by suspending Tiwari from both his position in the student wing and his primary membership in the Congress party.
