The continued exclusion of emerging batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi from the playing eleven during the fourth T20I against the West Indies in an ongoing five-match bilateral series has prompted strong reactions. Former captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth openly expressed his displeasure over the youngster being repeatedly overlooked. Srikkanth argued that the team management should focus on handing young talents adequate game time rather than constantly tampering with the opening combinations.
Advocating Opportunities for Emerging Talent
Throughout the current assignment against the West Indies, opener Abhishek Sharma has struggled to make a noticeable impact with the bat. Highlighting this dip in returns, Krishnamachari Srikkanth proposed that the team could have rested Abhishek Sharma and instead opened the innings with Sanju Samson paired alongside Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Sharing his thoughts on a YouTube video, the former captain criticized how the selections were handled.
“They have not only dented Sanju Samson’s confidence, but India has also completely shattered Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s confidence.”
Srikkanth emphasized that against an opponent like the West Indies, Suryavanshi deserved to be given at least three matches to settle in and display his potential at the international level.
Scrutiny Over Sanju Samson’s Consistency
While championing Suryavanshi's inclusion, Krishnamachari Srikkanth also placed Sanju Samson’s batting consistency under the scanner. Even though Samson has produced positive moments in the ongoing series against the West Indies, his wider stretch of recent performances has lacked stability. Samson delivered three crucial innings during India’s victorious 2026 T20 World Cup campaign, yet his subsequent outings have appeared far less dependable.
Srikkanth observed that Samson’s trajectory has perpetually fluctuated, leaving a permanent question mark over his consistency. He pointed out that while Samson can produce sudden flashes of brilliance in major tournaments, he often slips into abrupt spells of low scores. According to Srikkanth, a player like Abhishek Sharma does not endure such extreme swings between highs and lows. He further remarked that it remains to be seen whether Samson can step up and score runs in the subsequent fixture.
Fourth T20I Match Summary and Series Status
With this outcome, the five-match T20I series stands evenly poised at 2-2. Despite a fighting half-century from Sanju Samson in the fourth encounter, the Indian side fell short by 24 runs. The West Indies posted a commanding total of 247 in their allotted 20 overs, anchored by a remarkable 102-run century from Shai Hope. In response, India were bowled out for 223 in 19.3 overs, losing 9 wickets before running out of deliveries and conceding the high-scoring contest.
