Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has made it clear that his passion and drive remain fully intact despite not picking up massive numbers of wickets in the Duleep Trophy. Having been away from the national side since March 2025, the seasoned fast bowler emphasized that his motivation levels have not dropped in the slightest, and he continues to keep his sights firmly fixed on reaching the next level of his career.
Chasing the Next Level and Staying Motivated
Shami last played a Test match for India during the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in 2023. Speaking after the conclusion of the Duleep Trophy final, Shami noted that if a player has to hunt for reasons to stay motivated, there are plenty to be found. At this level of the sport, he believes that if an individual is not self-motivated, their overall approach is fundamentally flawed. Regardless of the tier or format one is playing in, a player's eyes must always be locked on the subsequent milestone.
Contributing to the Title Triumph
The 36-year-old athlete dismantled the South Zone middle order during the title clash by dismissing Ravichandran Smaran and Sheikh Rasheed at crucial moments. This intervention proved instrumental in restricting the opposition to a total of 336 in the first innings, thereby handing East Zone a match-defining lead of 372 runs. Shami expressed immense joy over the fact that East Zone's championship victory coincided with his 100th first-class appearance. If someone plays purely for the badge, that hunger and desire to succeed emerge naturally. Playing with such immense pride only amplifies the competitive instinct to fight on the field. Sharing his thoughts on the younger cohort, Shami pointed out that the youngster Vaibhav Suryavanshi in their team is practically as old as his own career. He noted that the youngster possesses a natural innocence, loves to joke around, and grasps things very quickly. However, Shami also cautioned against unnecessarily tampering with the thoughts and styles of young players, noting that they arrive with a certain degree of maturity today. Because these youngsters regularly participate in the IPL and other high-pressure tournaments, maturity arrives early, leaving little need for excessive coaching.
Navigating Tough Pitch Conditions
Discussing the on-field challenges, Shami observed that under those specific conditions, one cannot realistically expect conventional swing, noting that the bounce was relatively low. By contrast, Bengaluru offered surfaces far more favorable to fast bowlers, making the transition a stark contrast. His approach remained strictly anchored to hitting consistent line and length, which is where he seeks his breakthroughs. He candidly added that if a bowler cannot extract reverse swing in such intense heat, there is little point to the effort.
