Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi will not be present at the Asian Games 2026 gold medal match between India and Pakistan at Nishin Korogi Park in Japan. The continental governing body announced that prior scheduling commitments will prevent Naqvi from traveling to Nagoya for the decisive contests. Alongside this update, he conveyed formal best wishes to all four squads competing in the gold and bronze medal encounters.
Naqvi simultaneously serves as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and holds the office of interior minister of Pakistan. This convergence of political and sports authority has been a central point of friction with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Following the Pahalgam terror attack last year that claimed innocent Indian lives, Indian defense personnel launched Operation Sindoor. In a strong demonstration of solidarity with the armed forces, both the Indian men's and women's national cricket teams refused to accept their respective Asia Cup trophies from his hands.
The Longstanding Protocol Impasse
During both the 2025 men's Asia Cup and the women's edition held this year, Indian squads returned home without taking the silverware from Naqvi. The BCCI had formally requested the ACC to permit the vice president to conduct the presentation ceremony, but Naqvi refused to yield, insisting that any trophy presentation to India must come directly from him. That uncompromising posture led to widespread backlash across social media platforms, where detractors frequently labeled him a trophy thief.
Relief for Organizers and Sports Bodies
Concerns had intensified over how the medal ceremony at the continental games would unfold if Naqvi, by virtue of his sporting stature, were authorized to present podium honors. Observers questioned whether players would exchange customary handshakes or stage another formal boycott on the podium. His decision to stay away completely dispels that tension, sparing the Olympic Council of Asia, local organizers, and the Indian Olympic Association an uncomfortable confrontation.
Wishes Extended to Contending Teams
Addressing the upcoming matches, Naqvi stated, "My warmest wishes go out to all participants ahead of the gold and bronze medal matches at Asian Games 2026. Due to commitments, I will remain away from Nagoya. But I will eagerly look forward to some thrilling contests." With his absence confirmed, organizers can conduct the podium protocols smoothly, allowing athletic performance rather than political friction to define the summit clash.
