Mumbai Indians have made a major leadership overhaul ahead of the 2027 Women's Premier League campaign by naming Luke Williams as their new head coach. The tactical switch comes after Lisa Keightley decided to step down from the top coaching position. Keightley, who had taken charge of the squad back in September 2025, chose to move on from her duties with the franchise.
Rebuilding After A Dismal Season
The coaching transition follows an uncharacteristically poor run for the two-time champions. Under former Australian batter Keightley, Mumbai Indians slipped to a fourth-place finish in the five-team competition, marking their lowest standing across the four editions of the tournament. The franchise had previously claimed the inaugural crown in 2023 and followed it with another title triumph in 2025, alongside an Eliminator finish in 2024. Looking forward to steering the squad back into contention, Williams stated, “We have a great opportunity to build something together, play an exciting brand of cricket and compete for success.”
A Proven Track Record Across Global Leagues
Williams brings an elite coaching pedigree to the dugout, having previously guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden title victory during the 2025 edition of the tournament. His global managerial portfolio includes title-winning runs with Adelaide Strikers Women in the Women's Big Bash League and Southern Brave Women in The Hundred. Beyond women's franchise cricket, Williams has contributed as an assistant coach for men's setups in the BBL. He has also worked within the England coaching setup alongside former Mumbai Indians head coach Charlotte Edwards.

Franchise owner Nita Ambani expressed complete faith in the new appointment, noting, “Luke is a proven winner and brings with him rich experience, deep understanding of the women’s game and a strong commitment to developing players.” On the field during his playing days, Williams distinguished himself in grade cricket by winning the Bradman Medal three times across the 2005-06, 2007-08, and 2009-10 seasons. The Mumbai management will now look to his tactical acumen to revitalize the team and restore their championship-winning momentum.
