Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the young Indian contingent that represented the nation at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China, welcoming the participants to his official residence on 9 October. Widely recognised across the globe as the Olympics of Skills, the event took place from 22 to 27 September. During their interactive session with the Prime Minister, the returning candidates recounted their experiences from the international arena, detailing their exposure to modern software, cutting-edge tools, advanced technical systems, and sophisticated working methodologies. The participants also highlighted how ongoing government initiatives aimed at skill development are actively benefiting and empowering youth across the country.
Practical Skills Hold Equal Weight to Formal Degrees
Congratulating the contingent for flying the national flag on an elite global stage, Narendra Modi urged the participants to step forward as official ambassadors for skill development. He underscored that practical skills carry just as much significance in the modern era as traditional academic degrees. Emphasising the rising importance of specialised proficiencies, the Prime Minister noted that rapid technological evolution demands that young professionals continuously upgrade their existing capabilities, acquire fresh skill sets, and remain adaptable to emerging technologies. He further encouraged the participants to align their expertise with international market requirements and share their observations to help refine India's vocational training ecosystem.
Vocational Training Centres Match the Calibre of IITs and IIMs
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister reflected on the core objective behind setting up a dedicated Ministry of Skill Development, asserting that skill training centres possess an importance no less than premier institutions like IITs and IIMs. He urged the young professionals to offer constructive feedback and actionable insights based on their global exposure, enabling the government to strengthen the overall training architecture across India. The dialogue centred on shifting societal perceptions and placing hands-on technical proficiency at the forefront of national growth.
