New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has thrown down an open challenge to veteran Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of their upcoming series, signaling a fierce contest ahead. Santner acknowledged that both legendary players have historically enjoyed favorable batting conditions on New Zealand pitches, but expressed hope that the circumstances will pan out differently this time around. In international cricket, both Kohli and Rohit now exclusively feature in the fifty-over format. India and New Zealand are scheduled to lock horns later this year in October and November for a packed itinerary comprising five one-day internationals, five twenty-over internationals, and two Test matches.
ODI Series and World Cup Preparations
Santner described the upcoming India-New Zealand series as a crucial stepping stone in their preparation for the global tournament. Speaking while leading Edinburgh Castle Rockers in the European T20 Premier League, Santner emphasized that the series promises to be fantastic as every participating side attempts to construct its best possible squad configuration ahead of next year's ODI World Cup. Outlining the schedule, Santner noted that after playing five ODIs against India, New Zealand will host Sri Lanka for three matches at home before kicking off full-scale preparations for the World Cup in England scheduled for September 2027. He stressed that their immediate priority is securing a series victory against India on home turf, which would mark a monumental achievement, followed by finalising the ideal team combination by October next year.
Reflecting on Past Success and Upcoming Test Hurdles
Recalling their previous red-ball assignment, New Zealand registered a historic three-nil clean sweep against India away from home, effectively shattering India's formidable undefeated streak at home that had stretched across more than twelve years and eighteen consecutive series. Addressing the transition phase currently underway within the Indian Test setup, Santner noted that the two upcoming Test matches scheduled in New Zealand in November could present a steep learning curve for some of the newer faces in the squad. Having tormented India with thirteen wickets in the second Test at Pune during the previous tour, Santner underscored that quick adaptation to alien conditions remains paramount for any visiting player stepping onto local pitches.
Analyzing India's Squad Depth and Bowling Attack
Santner pointed out that playing red-ball cricket in New Zealand with unfamiliar pitches could offer extra assistance to fast bowlers compared to Indian tracks, requiring visiting debutants to adjust rapidly. However, he was quick to describe the current Indian Test lineup as thoroughly balanced and adequately prepared for the challenge. Highlighting the threats posed by the visitors, Santner acknowledged that Jasprit Bumrah's return significantly bolsters their bowling unit, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna possess the natural ability to extract extra bounce from the surface, complemented by the spin options of Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar.
