A dazzling counter-attacking masterclass from Ravichandran Smaran turned the tide for Rest of India on the third day of the Irani Cup clash against Jammu and Kashmir. Coming into bat when the side needed solidity, Smaran compiled an undefeated 126 to guide his team to 306 for 8 by stumps. Rest of India now holds a commanding overall lead of 265 runs, largely compensating for the surprising batting failures of senior campaigners Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan.
Smaran Leads the Lower-Order Fightback
Smaran anchored the innings with remarkable composure before shifting gears to punish the opposition bowling attack. His 131-ball stay at the crease was decorated with 15 boundaries and five towering sixes. The middle-order batter found reliable support down the order, first constructing a 52-run alliance for the sixth wicket with Manav Suthar, who contributed 16. Smaran then engineered an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 109 runs alongside Mukesh Choudhary (unbeaten on 9), completely deflating the fielding side in the final session.
Sangwan Solid Half-Century Lays the Groundwork
Resuming the day with a 17-run deficit and one wicket down from the previous evening, Rest of India required a steady foundation. Left-handed opening batsman Sanat Sangwan provided exactly that, grinding out 55 runs from 160 deliveries with three fours and a six. Sangwan joined forces with Sudip Kumar Gharami (33) to orchestrate a 50-run partnership for the second wicket. He then combined with Saransh Jain (25) to post 70 runs for the third wicket, effectively nullifying the overnight deficit and edging the team ahead.
Twin Failures for Pant and Sarfaraz
The middle order, however, endured a sudden wobble courtesy of disciplined bowling from the hosts. Umar Nazir Mir produced a fiery spell, dismissing Saransh Jain and removing Sarfaraz Khan for a duck due to faulty footwork within an interval of just four deliveries. Rest of India skipper Rishabh Pant, walking in at number eight, also had an outing to forget after being trapped leg-before by Sahil Lotra for just 8 runs. While Lotra (3 for 71) and Mir (3 for 87) shared six wickets between them, Smaran's magnificent knock ensured Rest of India retained complete control of the match.
