A breach of disciplinary and security guidelines during a Tamil Nadu Premier League match has cost an emerging young cricketer dearly. The Anti-Corruption and Security Unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India imposed a ₹1 lakh fine on a 26-year-old batsman after he was caught sending text messages to his girlfriend from inside the restricted match area.
Texting Incident Inside the Restricted Zone
The incident occurred during a recent Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) fixture while play was actively underway. Under established cricket integrity guidelines, the Players and Match Officials Area, commonly known as the PMOA, is strictly off-limits for personal electronic devices and mobile communications. However, the 26-year-old batsman failed to stay away from his mobile phone during the contest and was caught texting his girlfriend. Because operating a phone within the dugout constitutes a direct violation of anti-corruption protocols, the matter was immediately reported to the BCCI anti-corruption unit.
Official Confirmation and Player Identification
Taking into account the sensitive nature of the ongoing inquiry, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has withheld the formal disclosure of the cricketer's name. A senior official from the state association confirmed the details of the event, stating that the player's identity cannot be revealed while the investigation remains active. Nevertheless, the official verified that the individual is a promising left-handed batsman who scored two vital half-centuries for Tamil Nadu during the previous Ranji Trophy season.
The state association official further clarified that the player faces no allegations of match-fixing or corruption. The communication was strictly a personal text message sent to his female friend. Even though there was no corrupt intent behind the act, transmitting messages from the PMOA represents a clear breach of safety and security regulations, prompting the board to treat the matter as a serious protocol violation.
Avoidance of a Two-Year Suspension
During the preliminary assessment, board disciplinary authorities considered taking stern action against the lapse. Initial discussions among officials involved imposing a strict two-year ban on the 26-year-old cricketer. Had such a suspension been enacted, it could have severely impacted the young player's budding professional career.
However, subsequent detailed checks revealed no evidence of betting, match-fixing, or corrupt motives. Investigators concluded that the incident was entirely an act of personal carelessness and indiscipline. Recognizing that the offense did not involve corrupt practices, authorities softened their stance and opted to issue a ₹1 lakh penalty instead of enforcing a two-year ban.

- Surrender of Communication Devices: Upon entering designated PMOA spaces such as team dressing rooms, dugouts, and match officials' quarters on match day, players and support staff must surrender all communication devices, including mobile phones, smartwatches, and laptops, to anti-corruption personnel.
- Strict External Communication Ban: Until the match officially concludes, no participant is permitted to contact external individuals via calls, internet platforms, or messaging services. Reaching out to family or friends from inside the restricted area is strictly treated as a security violation regardless of the intention.
Previous Instance in the Indian Premier League
This instance is not the first time the cricket board has penalized individuals for improper mobile phone usage during a game. A similar breach occurred during the previous season of the Indian Premier League. Romi Bhinder, who served as manager for Rajasthan Royals and was appointed guardian to young cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi, was found using a mobile phone inside the team dugout during an IPL match. The BCCI responded to that breach by penalizing Romi Bhinder with a ₹1 lakh fine.
