East Zone young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to make a major impact in the second innings of the Duleep Trophy semi-final and was dismissed after a brief resistance. When his team required a steady chase on the board, he could not convert his time at the crease into a substantial score. Initially, he batted at a very slow pace, but the moment he attempted to accelerate and score through boundaries, Yash Thakur's bowling dismantled his plans. Captain Rajat Patidar took a brilliant catch to bring an end to his fighting knock, halting East Zone's momentum.
Fell short of a century in the first innings
Earlier in the first innings of the same semi-final clash, Vaibhav Suryavanshi had delivered a remarkable batting performance. Playing against Central Zone, East Zone posted a total of 266 runs in their first essay. During this phase, Vaibhav displayed tremendous batting form, scoring 92 runs off just 81 deliveries. He missed out on his maiden century by a mere eight runs. Nevertheless, he etched his name in the record books by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy. He successfully broke a nearly 57-year-old record previously held by Lakshman Singh.
First innings scores ended in a tie
An intriguing aspect of the match was that Central Zone had also scored exactly 266 runs in their first innings. As a result, both teams finished with identical scores in the opening phase. Subsequently, Central Zone added 158 runs in their second innings, setting a target of 159 runs for East Zone to claim victory. When Vaibhav walked out to bat in the second innings, he opted for a cautious approach and played slowly for a major part of his stay. Notably, he did not hit a single four or six in his first 20 balls, finally striking his first maximum off the 21st delivery.
Dismissed after trying to force the pace
By the completion of 13 overs in the innings, Vaibhav was batting on 22 runs from 37 balls, which included only a single six. In an effort to boost the scoring rate, he attacked the first four balls of the 14th over, smashing three fours and a six. Yash Thakur was operating during that over. On the very final delivery of the same over, Vaibhav attempted another big stroke, but the ball failed to connect properly with his bat. Captain Rajat Patidar completed an exceptional catch to end his stay at the crease. Vaibhav scored 40 runs from 43 deliveries, laced with three fours and two sixes.
