In the sport of cricket, securing a hat-trick is regarded as a rare and prestigious milestone for any bowler. While achieving this feat against tailenders in the lower order does happen occasionally, dismissing three top-order batters with consecutive deliveries right at the start of a match sounds almost impossible. Yet, this extraordinary feat has actually materialized in the annals of cricket history, stunning fans and experts alike.
The player behind this remarkable achievement is none other than Indian fast bowler Irfan Pathan. This unforgettable moment unfolded during a Test match in Karachi in 2006 during India tour of Pakistan. Upon winning the toss in that crucial Karachi fixture, Indian captain Rahul Dravid elected to field first. Entrusting the new ball to Irfan Pathan to open the bowling attack, Dravid set in motion a sequence of events that remains unmatched in the sport to this day.
Turning The Over Around With The Last Three Deliveries
As the match commenced in Karachi, Salman Butt and Imran Farhat walked out to open the batting innings for Pakistan. Irfan Pathan began with probing deliveries that Salman Butt managed to survive for the first three balls of the over. However, on the fourth delivery, Butt edged the ball, resulting in a sharp catch taken safely at slip by captain Rahul Dravid. Following this initial breakthrough, Pakistan captain Younis Khan stepped onto the pitch to face the onslaught.
Before Younis Khan could settle at the crease, Irfan Pathan trapped him lbw with the fifth delivery of the over. This double strike sent shockwaves through the Pakistani dressing room and stunned the crowd gathered at the stadium. Mohammad Yousuf then walked in to face the hat-trick ball, but Irfan Pathan castled him with the final delivery of the over. Completing the hat-trick with the last three balls of the opening over, Pathan etched his name in history as the first bowler ever to achieve this feat in the very first over of a match.
Defeat Despite A Historic Individual Milestone
Despite the sensational start provided by Irfan Pathan and his historic hat-trick, the Indian team ultimately suffered a heavy defeat in this Karachi Test. After the top-order collapse, Pakistan mounted a strong recovery through their lower-order batters. Kamran Akmal played a brilliant century knock of 113 runs, while Shoaib Akhtar and Abdul Razzaq chipped in with 45 runs each to push the team total to 245 runs. In response, the Indian team managed to score 238 runs in their first innings, bringing the match back to an even contest.
Pakistan Seizes Control And Wins The Test
During the second phase of the match, Pakistan put up a dominant batting display, piling up 599 runs before declaring their second innings. This left the Indian team with a daunting target of 607 runs to chase in the fourth innings. Under immense pressure, the batting lineup folded for 265 runs, handing Pakistan a comprehensive victory by 341 runs. Consequently, the grand impact of Irfan Pathan historic hat-trick was somewhat overshadowed by the magnitude of India overall defeat in the series.
