A shocking shooting incident shook a middle school in southern France on Monday morning, when a 14-year-old student opened fire inside the educational institution. The attack, which took place at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne near Marseille, left the school principal and a teacher injured, while a swift intervention by staff members prevented further bloodshed. Regional officials confirmed that no children suffered physical harm during the ordeal, and the teenage suspect was successfully taken into police custody.
According to regional authorities, the ninth-grade student entered the school grounds carrying a shotgun concealed inside a guitar case. Bouches-du-Rhône departmental council president Martine Vassal told reporters that several gunshots echoed across the premises shortly after the boy arrived. The 53-year-old headteacher was reportedly struck in the leg and lower back, while a 37-year-old teacher sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. A third individual at the scene is also reported to have suffered minor injuries.
Immediate Lockdown and Psychological Support
City hall officials confirmed that a member of staff bravely restrained the armed teenager in a school corridor before he could cause greater harm. Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari provided updates on social media, emphasizing that all students were immediately confined and secured within seconds to protect them from danger. A specialized psychological support unit was quickly established on site to assist children who experienced trauma from the violent event.
Mayor Squillari noted that while the children practically witnessed very little because the incident unfolded in the hallway, quite a few were psychologically affected and required examination by psychologists. Describing the suspect as a child just like any other, the mayor mentioned to broadcaster BFMTV that the boy's father had recently requested a meeting with the school educational advisor, though specifics remain unclear. Local media outlets, citing sources close to the investigation, reported that the shooting is not believed to be linked to ongoing protests regarding school conditions.
Government Response and Ministerial Visit
High-ranking government officials announced plans to visit the site of the shooting in southern France on Monday afternoon. Education Minister Édouard Geffray and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez scheduled a joint trip to Aubagne in the wake of the violence. Minister Geffray shared a statement on social media, confirming that two staff members from the National Education system became victims of gunshot wounds at the school and naming a student as the alleged perpetrator.
He further described the incident in strong terms, writing that the unacceptable act serves as yet further evidence of the rise of unchecked violence in society, which requires a collective stand from everyone. As police continue their formal investigation into how the teenager obtained the firearm and brought it onto campus, the local community remains focused on recovery and ensuring the safety of students and staff members alike.
