Bitcoin pushed back above $80,000 as buyers regained an appetite for risk across crypto markets. Live data at the 2026-09-18 close-bell put BTC-USD at $80,932, 5.93% above the previous close of $76,404. Gold reached a one-week high near $4,350, but Bitcoin still confronts substantial sell supply around $82,000 and a bearish MACD reading.
The live tape shows strong participation
Trading volume ran at 1.33x the 20-day average, pointing to heavier participation than in a typical session. The 52-week range is $57,748 to $97,861, so the current price sits in the upper half but remains below the top of that range.
Moving averages keep the long-term structure positive. EMA20 is $77,238, EMA50 is $73,960 and EMA200 is $74,173, while SMA50 is $72,473 and SMA200 is $70,398. The complication is that EMA50 remains below EMA200, creating a death cross even though price is in a long-term uptrend.
The Bollinger(20,2) bands extend from $74,999 to $81,297, with a midpoint of $78,148, and price remains inside them. RSI(14) is 64. MACD is 1116.69 versus a 1521.20 signal, while the histogram is -404.51, giving the live reading a bearish tone. ADX(14) is 41 and indicates a trending market; the Stochastic fast line is 96 against a 45 signal line.
ATR(14) is $2,303.18, which can serve as the daily stop-loss buffer. The 20-day support is around $74,945 and resistance is near $82,262. The main pivot is $79,473, with S1 at $77,759 and S2 at $74,587; R1 is $82,645 and R2 is $84,358.
Regulatory activity lifted the market mood
The CFTC sent its crypto asset rulemaking to the White House for review. That helped sentiment across crypto markets after the CLARITY Act failed to advance in the United States Senate on Tuesday.
The filing carried the title Regulation Crypto Asset Transactions and Regulation Crypto Asset Markets. It went to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), part of the Office of Management and Budget, which reviews regulations before they are published.
With the CLARITY Act stalled, the CFTC and SEC are each arguing that they can oversee the crypto industry. SEC Chair Paul Atkins said exemptions are temporary, adding, “they allow TSVs to trade tokenized NMS stock in a permissioned environment today.”
The macro backdrop remains a constraint. The Federal Reserve's 25-basis-point interest rate hike and hawkish stance add pressure, while the stalled CLARITY Act and escalating Middle East tensions may restrict Bitcoin's upside.
A supply wall still looms near $82,000
An earlier chart setup, separate from the live snapshot, placed Bitcoin decisively above a 50-day, 100-day and 200-day EMA cluster roughly between $71,700 and $73,950. SuperTrend support near $72,788 strengthened the broader bullish backdrop.
RSI was close to 62 in that reading, consistent with ongoing demand. At the same time, MACD sat under its signal and its histogram was negative, warning that upside force was cooling and favoring a pause over a full trend reversal.
The first support then was the intraday pivot near $80,000, with the main weekly demand zone at $75,000 behind it. A larger decline would bring $73,953 on the 50-day EMA and about $73,178 on the 200-day EMA into focus as a tightly packed support zone.
Additional support came from SuperTrend at $72,788 and the 100-day EMA at $71,666. For a sharper retreat, the former resistance trendline break near $65,202 would become the next medium-term floor. Each recent attempt to advance has run into substantial sell supply around $82,000.
Gold is firm, but confirmation is missing
Gold is holding near $4,350, above its 50-day and 200-day EMAs, after reaching a one-week high. For the advance to last, price must first clear the supply zone around $4,400.
Above price, the SuperTrend sits at $4,591 and the broken downward trendline is near $4,513. RSI is around 49 and MACD is below zero with negative readings, showing indecision more than aggressive selling.
The first support below is the 50-day EMA at $4,343. Below that, the 200-day EMA near $4,319.34 forms a stronger chart floor, and buyers are expected to protect the larger uptrend there.
Initial topside resistance is the 100-day EMA at $4,361. A close above $4,361 on a daily basis would clear the path toward roughly $4,513, with the SuperTrend near $4,591 acting as the next, tougher ceiling. XAU/USD should remain range-bound while it sits between its 200-day and 100-day EMAs. Confirmation requires price to clear both nearby moving-average pivots and the supply around $4,400.
The rebound revives the altcoin-season debate
If Katara and Sokka woke up to the crypto market after two years frozen in ice, it could feel as if 100 years had passed. Bitcoin had reached record highs just over a year earlier. That encouraged expectations of a standard altcoin season, with gains from Bitcoin recycled into smaller coins for better returns.
One Friday chart setup had Bitcoin trading above $78,000, but the 50-week SMA near $78,760 continued to cap the upside. The stalled CLARITY Act in the United States Senate and rising Middle East tensions add headwinds, as does the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance after its 25-basis-point rate increase.
Since touching $57,800 in July, its lowest level of the year, Bitcoin has rebounded sharply. From that July low, it has risen nearly 33%, with gains in both July and August. The key question is whether the rebound starts a fresh bullish phase or remains part of a wider bear-market recovery.
Following early-week macro worries and regulatory pressure, buyers pushed BTC back toward $78,000 in that chart setting. Ethereum moved with the market's neutral-to-bullish tone, stayed above support at $2,400 and gathered momentum for a possible short-term break at $2,500. The current close-bell live reading is $80,932, so the $78,000 figure belongs to the earlier chart context.
Four concepts behind the market move
By market capitalization, Bitcoin is the biggest cryptocurrency; it is a virtual currency created to function as money. Because no individual, organization or group controls it, transactions can occur without a third party.
The term altcoin covers every cryptocurrency except Bitcoin, though Ethereum is sometimes excluded because the two largest coins are central to forking. Using that definition, Litecoin came first: it split from Bitcoin's protocol and was presented as an improved version.
A stablecoin aims for a steady price by holding reserves tied to the asset it tracks. Its price is linked to a commodity or financial instrument, including the US Dollar (USD), and supply is managed through demand or an algorithm.
Stablecoins primarily let investors move into and out of crypto markets. They can also act as a store of value when crypto prices are volatile.
Bitcoin dominance compares Bitcoin's market capitalization with the combined capitalization of every cryptocurrency. The measure shows how much of the crypto market is tied to Bitcoin.
It often rises before and during bull markets as investors shift toward large, comparatively stable assets like Bitcoin. When it falls, capital or realized profits are usually rotating into altcoins for greater upside, frequently setting off a wave of altcoin gains.
Short and medium horizons send different signals
The 1-6 week outlook is technically negative. The short-term horizontal channel has broken lower. A double top accompanied the fall through $77,511 support, producing a negative signal and pointing to $74,401 or lower. Price is now testing $77,500 resistance; rejection would preserve the negative view, while a break higher would flip the signal positive.
The 1-6 month outlook is technically neutral. Bitcoin has cleared the top of a falling trend channel, suggesting the decline may slow or give way to sideways movement. The medium-term rectangle runs from $57,012 support to $80,654 resistance, with $63,000 and $82,000 as further boundaries. A firm break through one of them should establish direction.
Bitcoin's move above $80,000 confirms renewed buying, but the live MACD, death cross and resistance between $82,000 and $82,645 stop short of a clean bullish confirmation. Gold faces a similar confirmation problem while it remains boxed between its nearby moving averages and the $4,400 supply zone.
