The local body elections in Rajasthan have turned into a high-stakes political battleground just days before the scheduled voting. With the heads of 309 urban local bodies set to be elected on September 21, both the ruling and opposition camps have intensified their maneuvers to secure power. The political atmosphere is charged with accusations of councilor poaching, forced confinement, and misuse of state machinery. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are locked in a fierce confrontation, accusing each other of undermining democratic processes to control these influential local administrative bodies.
Allegations of Horse Trading and Coercion
The Congress party has launched a sharp offensive against the BJP, alleging that a massive horse-trading operation is underway to influence the outcome of the upcoming elections. According to senior leaders of the Congress, the BJP is attempting to bribe councilors with staggering offers of up to Rs 2 crore each to switch allegiances. Beyond financial inducements, the opposition has accused the ruling party of deploying police personnel to threaten and coerce elected representatives. The BJP has categorically rejected these assertions, describing them as baseless excuses to cover up the Congress's own internal divisions and failures.
High Voltage Drama Unfolds in Nagaur Resort
The escalating tension translated into direct physical confrontation in the Nagaur district, specifically in the Kuchera region. A resort housing Congress councilors became the center of a high-voltage standoff when a police team arrived to search the premises. The situation quickly escalated into a heated argument between the police officers and Tejpal Mirdha, who is the Congress party's candidate for the local board's presidency.
The police action was initiated following a formal complaint registered by Mahendra, the brother-in-law of a Congress councilor named Limbaram. In his complaint, Mahendra alleged that Limbaram and his wife had been abducted and were being kept under duress to force them to vote against their will. However, the Congress party quickly retaliated by releasing a video statement of Limbaram. In the footage, the councilor declared that he was completely safe and was staying at the resort entirely of his own free will, contradicting his relative's claims.
Heavy Criticism from Top Leadership
The incident in Kuchera has drawn sharp reactions from the topmost leadership of the Congress in Rajasthan. Congress State President Govind Singh Dotasra took to social media to highlight what he termed as police high-handedness and intimidation. Dotasra claimed that the vehicle of presidential candidate Tejpal Mirdha had previously been targeted and hit in a suspicious collision. To support his allegations of state surveillance, Dotasra shared screenshots of a chat belonging to Congress leader and former minister Shakuntala Rawat, suggesting that law enforcement authorities were actively tracking her movements.
Adding weight to these claims, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot accused the BJP of using financial power and administrative pressure to subvert the elections. Gehlot asserted that individual councilors were being offered Rs 2 crore each to change their votes. He further claimed that district collectors across Rajasthan were being pressured by the state authorities to facilitate the formation of BJP-led local boards.
BJP Counters the Accusations
Defending the action, BJP leader Arun Chaturvedi strongly dismissed the allegations of financial corruption and administrative high-handedness. Chaturvedi maintained that the allegations of horse-trading were entirely unfounded. According to him, councilors from both the Congress and independent backgrounds are voluntarily coming forward to support the BJP because they want to ensure rapid developmental work in their respective wards and municipalities.
Addressing the police raid in Kuchera, Chaturvedi argued that the police were merely doing their duty under the law. He pointed out that since a family member had filed a formal abduction complaint, the police were legally bound to investigate the matter and locate the missing individual. He questioned why the Congress was objecting to a standard investigative procedure if they had nothing to hide. Chaturvedi also took a direct swipe at the former Chief Minister, asking whether Ashok Gehlot had won the previous local body elections during his tenure as Chief Minister through similar police interventions. He claimed that the Congress was suffering from severe internal factionalism, which was driving its councilors away.
Current Alignment and the Crucial September 21 Vote
Despite the intense disputes, the BJP has already made significant progress in securing local boards. Out of the 309 municipal bodies, the BJP has managed to form unopposed boards in 25 units. This includes the highly contested Bharatpur Municipal Corporation. In Bharatpur, the number of independent councilors was reported to be higher than those of both major parties. Despite this mathematical disadvantage, the BJP successfully convinced a key independent candidate to withdraw their nomination, paving the way for a smooth victory.
As the campaigning and confinement of councilors draw to a close, all political eyes are now fixed on September 21, the day of the crucial elections. The final outcome will reveal which party manages to secure the allegiance of the undecided and independent councilors to establish their administrative boards across the remaining municipal bodies of Rajasthan.
