Bihar boasts a rich and vibrant literary heritage. The soil of the region has nurtured numerous legendary writers and poets who created timeless masterpieces in Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, and Maithili. Literary giants such as Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Vidyapati, Nagarjun, and Ramवृक्ष Benipuri made monumental contributions to Indian literature through their writings. Indian cinema was also profoundly enriched by a legendary lyricist who hailed from Arrah in Bihar, although he was born in Rawalpindi, which is now in Pakistan. However, he did not enter the film industry by choice; rather, circumstances forced him to start writing songs for the big screen.
Early Passion for Poetry and Mushairas
The veteran lyricist possessed a deep passion for writing poetry since his childhood days. Following the tragic demise of his mother and sister, poetry served as his ultimate solace. Driven by work, he relocated to Mumbai and secured employment with Indian Railways. Despite his demanding routine, he kept his poetic aspirations alive by actively participating in poetic symposiums and mushairas. At one such mushaira, he crossed paths with Raj Kapoor, who grew immensely impressed by his composition titled 'Jalta Hai Punjab'. Raj Kapoor wanted to acquire the piece for his 1948 directorial venture 'Aag', but Shailendra firmly refused to hand it over because he was strictly opposed to commercializing his art.
Financial Crisis and Songs for Barsaat
As destiny would have it, when Shailendra's wife became pregnant, severe financial hardship engulfed his household. In a bid to seek assistance, he approached a wealthy friend, but no help was forthcoming. Left with virtually no options, he ultimately turned to Raj Kapoor out of compulsion. Reports indicate that Raj Kapoor was busy shooting for his film 'Barsaat' at that time. Understanding Shailendra's plight, the filmmaker offered him 500 rupees to write two songs. Shailendra readily accepted the proposal. Driven by monetary necessity, he penned two iconic tracks, namely 'Barsaat Mein' and 'Patli Kamar'. The legendary musical duo Shankar-Jaikishan composed the music for both these songs.
All-India Stardom and Teesri Kasam
The year 1949 marked the official cinematic debut of the legendary lyricist Shailendra through the film 'Barsaat'. Following this breakthrough, Shailendra went on to gift the Hindi film industry one magnificent masterpiece after another. Tracks like 'Awaara Hoon' and 'Mera Joota Hai Jaapani' became massive sensations across the entire country. He penned hundreds of successful songs for numerous movies that people continue to hum to this day. Furthermore, after cementing his legacy in Hindi cinema, Shailendra ventured into film production. He produced the critically acclaimed movie 'Teesri Kasam', based on a story by Phanishwar Nath Renu, which even went on to win a National Film Award. Although he passed away at the young age of 43, his immortal melodies cemented his legacy forever.
