A massive security tragedy has unfolded in Nigeria, where armed assailants launched a devastating assault on a local community in the northeastern part of the country. The national emergency agency confirmed on Tuesday that the brutal attack resulted in the deaths of at least 62 people. According to Ladan Ayuba, the state head of the National Emergency Management Agency, the raid took place on Friday within the Binari community located in the Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba state. The violence also left 52 other individuals injured, while thousands of residents were compelled to flee their homes in search of safety.
Bodies Recovered From River
Violent attacks by armed groups, locally referred to as bandits, targeting ordinary citizens are a recurring security challenge in northern Nigeria. Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency stated that 52 bodies have been recovered so far, with 15 of those retrieved directly from the Benue River. Taraba police spokesperson Victor Mashelizah indicated that the death toll remains provisional as more bodies are expected to be found as search operations continue across the rugged terrain.
Desperate Attempts to Escape
Isa Sanusi, the director of Amnesty International Nigeria, explained that the attackers strategically exploited the geography of the area. He noted that victims were driven toward the riverbank, forcing many desperate people to jump into the water to escape the advancing gunmen. Nigeria is currently grappling with a deeply complex security crisis characterized by armed gangs carrying out mass abductions for ransom and illegally occupying mining sites. In addition to these criminal networks, radical Islamic extremist factions such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province frequently terrorize the region.
Previous Attacks on Farmers
Violence targeting rural livelihoods has plagued the region previously as well. In a separate incident in northwestern Nigeria, gunmen previously killed 17 farmers while they were working in their fields, leaving 13 others injured and requiring hospital treatment. No group has yet claimed responsibility for this latest escalation, as authorities continue to monitor the fragile security situation.
