In a video shared on his official Instagram handle, Sunil Pal detailed his reaction upon hearing the news while on a shoot morning. Describing the situation as "gory kalyug" (a dark age), he questioned the rationale behind Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis honoring Samay Raina. Sunil Pal alleged that Raina's popular digital show 'India's Got Latent' frequently features abusive language, vulgar jokes, and explicit swearing by both contestants and panel judges. He asserted that the level of profanity used on the show is so extreme that it cannot be listened to in the presence of family or in polite society.
Concerns Over Negative Precedent For Emerging Comedians
Raising concerns about the broader impact on the entertainment industry, Sunil Pal warned that validating such content with government recognition sends a damaging message to young and upcoming standup comedians. He stated that aspiring artists will begin to believe that obscenity, controversial statements, and conflict with law enforcement are the standard path to building a successful career. Explaining his stance, Pal remarked that new talent might get the impression that to achieve fame, one should start cursing on stage, invite police complaints, create high-profile controversies, and get dragged to police stations. The felicitation comes after a major controversy involving Samay Raina's show 'India's Got Latent' in February 2025. During one of its episodes, a statement made by guest YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia triggered widespread public outrage and intense criticism. The dispute led to multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) being registered against Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, and several other panelists across different police stations. Facing severe backlash and legal scrutiny that forced him to attend multiple court hearings, Raina eventually took down all published episodes of 'India's Got Latent' from his official YouTube channel.
