Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has shared a fascinating insight regarding his iconic performance in the film Damini, years after its release. The actor revealed that he never expected his relatively small character in the movie to become such a massive sensation among the audience. According to Sunny, he had simply accepted the role to be a part of the film, unaware that the character would eventually become one of his most defining on-screen appearances.
Reflecting on the Damini legacy
During the trailer launch of his upcoming film Ikka, Sunny Deol reminisced about his time working on Damini. He explained that his friends were producing the film, which motivated him to join the project without any hesitation. At the time, the creators had described his involvement as a brief appearance, and he readily agreed simply out of a desire to collaborate. Sunny noted that he never tries to predict the commercial success of a film; instead, he focuses entirely on the creative journey. He mentioned that Damini granted him immense love from the audience, though he later struggled to find a role that carried the same weight and impact.
Capturing the spotlight
The film Damini, which hit theaters in 1993, was directed and co-written by Rajkumar Santoshi. Despite the presence of heavyweights like Meenakshi Seshadri, Rishi Kapoor, and Amrish Puri in the lead roles, Sunny Deol managed to completely steal the limelight with his intense performance. The theater audiences were known to erupt in thunderous applause whenever he delivered his powerful dialogues. The role proved to be so significant that it earned him a National Award. The movie centers on a woman who witnesses a rape committed against her domestic helper and decides to fight the entire legal system to ensure justice is served.
The return to the courtroom in Ikka
Interestingly, 34 years after his memorable turn in Damini, Sunny Deol is returning to the role of a lawyer in his latest venture, Ikka.
