Prior to starring in Taal, Aishwarya Rai had already earned international fame as a top fashion model and beauty queen. Her public image was strongly tied to high glamour and cosmetics, which presented a unique casting challenge for Subhash Ghai. To make audiences accept her as a modest and relatable girl from a small town, the director felt it was essential to break her existing star persona.
Ghai candidly told Aishwarya Rai that he would have to ruin her glamourous image for the role to feel authentic. When he consulted veteran choreographer Saroj Khan regarding potential alternatives to Madhuri Dixit, Saroj Khan offered a single recommendation without hesitation: Aishwarya Rai. That strong endorsement convinced Ghai that Aishwarya Rai possessed both the dance prowess and the screen presence required for the part.
Akshaye Khanna's Casting and the Stellar Ensemble
The casting of the male lead also came with a noteworthy backstory. Subhash Ghai revealed that veteran actor Vinod Khanna personally approached him and suggested his son Akshaye Khanna for the film.
