Comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, along with four other stand-up artists, has received major legal relief from the Supreme Court of India. The apex court has quashed all pending FIRs and criminal proceedings lodged against them over alleged insensitive jokes directed at persons with disabilities. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana observed that when individuals make genuine and sincere efforts to rectify past missteps, the outcomes yield positive and constructive benefits for society.
Supreme Court Bench Commends Constructive Intentions
During the proceedings, CJI Surya Kant expressed a reformative approach toward the artists, highlighting that they are promising young individuals capable of making meaningful contributions. CJI Surya Kant noted that if these talented youths have commenced work in a constructive direction, the overall impact will remain positive. The court emphasized that the primary objective of judicial scrutiny in such matters is to encourage accountability and genuine social reform rather than continuing punitive litigation once corrective actions have been demonstrated.
Charity Initiatives and Awareness for Disability Welfare
The bench took detailed notice of the tangible actions undertaken by the comedians following earlier court observations. Between March 14 and March 16, 2026, the group successfully conducted a dedicated chess tournament for persons with disabilities. This initiative was specifically designed to boost public awareness about non-governmental institutions working closely with the disabled community.

At that juncture, the bench expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in implementing court directions regarding disability inclusion and awareness programs. However, reviewing the latest compliance reports, the judges acknowledged that the artists subsequently took concrete and verifiable measures to fulfill their obligations.
Fundraising Milestones and Case Closure
It was presented before the court that through their live performances and digital events, the group has successfully generated approximately ₹12.5 crore dedicated to disability welfare. Furthermore, plans for four additional fundraising shows have been formalized. Taking into consideration the productive dialogue between the comedians and the petitioner organization, the court ruled that the compliance satisfied the spirit of its previous directives.
Consequently, the Supreme Court terminated all criminal proceedings and formally quashed the FIRs registered against Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, and Nishant Tanwar. The bench concluded with the expectation that the group will maintain their commitment to upholding the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities in their future public endeavors.
