The stage of the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 18 recently witnessed an extraordinary journey of perseverance that deeply moved host Amitabh Bachchan and millions of viewers nationwide. Hailing from Gorkhi village in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, Ganesh Baraiya has defied severe physical constraints to establish himself in the medical profession. Standing at just 3 feet 4 inches tall and living with a locomotor disability, Baraiya earned his MBBS degree against formidable odds and currently serves as a pediatrician at a hospital in Bhavnagar. During his appearance on the show, he reflected on the pivotal moments of his upbringing that shaped his remarkable trajectory.
Father Turned Down a 5-Lakh Circus Offer to Choose Education
During his interaction on the set, Baraiya shared a poignant childhood memory that fundamentally altered the course of his life. While he was attending school, representatives from a travelling circus visited his home. Observing his short stature, they presented his family with a commercial proposal, offering his father ₹5 lakh in cash in exchange for taking young Ganesh with them. For a family living in modest financial circumstances, that sum represented a substantial financial windfall. However, his father prioritized his son's dignity and academic potential over immediate monetary gain, rejecting the offer without hesitation. That resolute decision ensured that Ganesh could continue his schooling, eventually setting the foundation for his medical career.
Securing AIR 233 in NEET and Fighting a Supreme Court Legal Battle
Validating his father's unwavering faith, Ganesh excelled in his academic pursuits. He secured an impressive 87 percent in his Class 12 board examinations before appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). He achieved an outstanding All India Rank of 233 in the competitive entrance test. Despite his merit, gaining admission to medical school presented an unexpected obstacle when authorities initially denied him an MBBS seat, citing his physical disability as a disqualification. Undeterred, his school principal, Dalpat Kataria, stood by him and initiated a legal challenge against the decision. The matter escalated to the judicial system, where court intervention ultimately overturned the restriction, paving the way for Ganesh to claim his rightful medical seat.
Serving Child Patients at a Bhavnagar Hospital
Upon fulfilling all academic requirements and completing his MBBS degree, Dr. Ganesh Baraiya commenced his medical practice in Bhavnagar. He joined the pediatrics department of the hospital, where he now diagnoses and treats young children daily. His success stands as a profound testament to overcoming institutional and physical hurdles, proving that physical height does not define professional capabilities or intellectual stature. His journey continues to inspire aspiring medical students and individuals with disabilities across India.
The 3-Lakh Question That Concluded His KBC Journey
On Kaun Banega Crorepati 18, Baraiya demonstrated his knowledge by winning the Fasted Finger First segment to secure a spot on the Hot Seat opposite host Amitabh Bachchan. He systematically answered early questions to progress through the competition. However, his journey met a hurdle at the ₹3 lakh milestone. The question displayed images of four iconic Indian monuments: the Red Fort, the Taj Mahal, the Meenakshi Temple, and the Charminar, asking which of these landmarks is located geographically north of Gujarat. Having already exhausted his available lifelines, he was unable to lock in the correct response, causing his total prize money to drop to ₹25,000. Although he exited the game with a smaller monetary reward, his resilience, honesty, and uplifting life story left an indelible mark on the host and the national audience.
