The saga began in 1969 when the first film titled 'Khamoshi' arrived in theatres. The movie starred veteran actress Waheeda Rehman alongside a rapidly rising Rajesh Khanna. At that point, Khanna was quickly carving out his legendary status in Bollywood, while Rehman was already an established heavyweight in Hindi cinema.
The narrative revolved deeply around psychological and emotional complexities within human relationships. Directed by Asit Sen, the story featured Waheeda Rehman as a dedicated nurse whose personal life begins to unravel as she forms deep emotional attachments to her patients. Rajesh Khanna stepped into the shoes of a troubled patient, delivering a memorable performance alongside the lead actress.
Upon release, the performances and the poignant storyline received widespread critical appreciation, with particular praise directed at Waheeda Rehman's stellar acting. Sanjay Leela Bhansali And The 1996 Musical Attempt
Nearly three decades later in 1996, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to take a massive creative gamble by reviving the very same title. He brought together Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala for 'Khamoshi: The Musical'. To further strengthen the project, the director cast Nana Patekar, an actor widely considered a guarantor of intense performances and success during that era.
Despite the high expectations and the fresh pairing of Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala, the film could not escape the ominous shadow of the title. The onscreen chemistry between the leads failed to strike the right chord with the masses, and the movie turned out to be a major box office failure.
The 2019 Thriller And The Final Stumble
The third and final attempt under this legendary title occurred in 2019, when filmmakers decided to test the waters once more. This time, the project starred Prabhu Deva and Tamannaah Bhatia in lead roles, with Chakri Toleti stepping in to direct the venture.
Built as a suspenseful thriller, the story followed Tamannaah Bhatia as a young woman whose life plunges into a mysterious and dangerous situation. Prabhu Deva also played a crucial role in supporting the narrative. Although expectations were pinned on this modern thriller, the audience response proved lukewarm at best upon release. Plagued by weak box office numbers, the film was declared an outright disaster, cementing the strange pattern of unluckiness associated with the title.
