Notably, veteran actress Hema Malini dubbed her voice for that particular film.
Being Pigeoned into Glamorous Roles
In an interview with Filmfare, Silk Smitha revealed that she originally aspired to be a serious character actress. However, the runaway success of Vandichakkaram abruptly flooded her career with glamorous offers. Explaining why she took on sensual roles, she stated that the initial role was well-received by the public, which subsequently drove producers and directors to offer her similar parts. She noted that she could not afford to upset her producers or directors and thus accepted them, even though her true ambitions lay elsewhere.
Unprecedented Demand and Industry Backlash
Silk Smitha possessed a magnetic screen presence that extended far beyond standard glamorous performances, making her dance numbers massive hits and turning her mere presence into a major box office draw. Over an 18-year career, she appeared in more than 450 films. Her commercial pull was so immense that she charged around 50,000 rupees for a single dance sequence, a colossal sum at the time, frequently shooting two to three songs in a single day. She starred opposite Rajinikanth in the 1982 film Moondru Mugam.
