Iconic footballer Lionel Messi has expressed deep uncertainty surrounding the continuation of his professional career following the painful passing of his father, Jorge Messi. The 39-year-old Argentina captain returned to his homeland to join his family during this difficult time, sharing poignant reflections on his emotional state and future in the sport.
The Loss of Jorge Messi and Final Rites in Rosario
Jorge Messi passed away last week at the age of 68 following a long illness. He died at a hospital in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina. Jorge played a crucial role in his son's legendary career, having acted as his representative and agent since Messi was just 14 years old, guiding him as he developed into one of the greatest athletes in football history.
Following the news of his father's death, Messi traveled home with his family. A private funeral service took place on Sunday at a cemetery located in the town of Perez, situated on the outskirts of Rosario, where family members gathered to pay their final respects.
An Emotional Tribute and Uncertainty Over Career Continuation
Messi shared his grief in a heart-wrenching message published on social media. Reflecting on the loss of his father and manager, Messi wrote, "I don't know what I'm going to do without you." He further conveyed his struggle to find a path forward, noting that playing football was all he had ever known, yet he was no longer certain if he would continue doing so for much longer.
The forward lamented that his father had stood beside him from the very beginning of his journey, expressing heartbreak that they were unable to reach the very end of his playing career together after coming so close to its conclusion.
International Milestones and Return to Inter Miami
This personal tragedy comes after a momentous period in Messi's international and club career. Having captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup, Messi subsequently led the national team to the 2026 World Cup final in July, where Argentina finished as runners-up after a narrow 1-0 loss to Spain. Following the tournament, Messi resumed playing for his club side Inter Miami before returning home to Argentina upon his father's passing.
