In Haryana's Karnal district, a gang of thieves broke into a general store in the Nising area and walked away with nearly Rs 6.50 lakh in cash along with garlands made of currency notes, all while security cameras silently filmed the entire break-in. The target was Kapoor General Store on the main road, and police now say that footage is turning out to be the strongest lead in the case.
The shutter came down around 3 am
The incident is believed to have taken place in the early hours of Tuesday, close to 3 am. Footage shows three young men entering the shop after forcing the shutter open. One of them was dressed entirely in white, with a white cloth wrapped around his head, while a second man wore ordinary clothes; a third accomplice can also be seen in the recording, and together they took only minutes to force their way inside.
What the cameras captured
The recording shows the men pulling out bundles of currency notes, stacking them on the counter and then gathering them up to carry away. They also pulled down the note garlands that were on display in the shop. Curiously, the intruders did not touch anything else in the store, taking only the cash and the garlands, a detail that suggests they may have known exactly where the money was kept.
Shopkeeper had kept the cash aside for a payment
Shop owner Apnashit Singh said he had set aside roughly Rs 6.50 lakh in cash because he needed to make a payment to someone. On his way to a temple the next morning, he noticed the shutter had been broken. Going inside, he found both the cash and the note garlands missing, and he alerted the police right away.
Police and forensic team rushed to the spot
Nising police reached the store as soon as they were informed and were joined by a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, which examined the scene and collected evidence. Investigators have since taken possession of the shop's CCTV recording and are using it to try to identify the three men.
Other cameras in the area now under scrutiny
To trace the route the accused took to reach the shop and the direction they fled in afterwards, police are also reviewing footage from other CCTV cameras installed in the surrounding neighbourhood. The investigation has been stepped up on the back of the shopkeeper's formal complaint.
Police confident of a quick breakthrough
Head Constable Rajesh Kumar of Nising police said, "The team reached the spot as soon as the information came in, and the accused will be caught soon." He added that the evidence gathered by the FSL team along with the CCTV footage now forms the backbone of the investigation.
