A severe structural scare gripped the Sushant Lok-1 neighbourhood of Gurugram, Haryana, when an under-construction five-storey building visibly tilted to one side. Deep foundation digging on an adjoining plot destabilised the surrounding earth, causing the nearly completed building to lean approximately two to two and a half inches. The sudden shift triggered panic among nearby residents, requiring rapid intervention from law enforcement teams to secure the perimeter.
Immediate Evacuations Avert Catastrophic Structural Collapse
Upon receiving distress alerts regarding the leaning structure, police units deployed to the site without delay. Assessing the immediate collapse risk to adjoining properties, officers initiated an urgent evacuation of three houses located on either side of the affected structure. More than 20 individuals residing in these neighboring homes were moved out to safety. Timely preventive measures and coordinated on-ground response prevented injuries and contained the risk of potential casualties.
Police Register Criminal Case Against Three Over Dangerous Excavation
The incident centers around Plot Number 1770 in Block C of Sushant Lok-1. Based on an official complaint submitted by the owner of the affected property, authorities initiated legal proceedings at the Sushant Lok police station. Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the owner of the adjacent plot, the site contractor, and the earthmover operator handling the machinery. Preliminary findings indicate that heavy earth excavation carried out without adequate soil support or safety precautions caused the foundation shift.
Broader Scrutiny of Construction Norms and Enforcement
The mishap occurs amid an ongoing regulatory pause regarding unauthorized building activity in Gurugram. Demolition and sealing actions across planned private builder colonies remain suspended pursuant to directives from the Supreme Court. Prior to this judicial stay, enforcement authorities had already taken punitive action against approximately 160 residential properties across DLF, Sushant Lok, and South City. The latest subsidence event has renewed scrutiny over engineering safeguards and developer compliance during high-density urban infill projects.
