In recent times, alkaline water has been gaining massive popularity among health-conscious individuals. This type of water has a significantly higher pH level compared to standard tap water. While normal tap water generally maintains a pH level between 6.5 and 7, any water with a pH reading above 7 is classified as alkaline. Typically, alkaline water ranges between 8 and 9 on the pH scale.
Natural alkaline water is traditionally sourced from mountain springs and water flowing over rocks. Water originating from natural springs contains a rich abundance of minerals. Alkaline water can also feature essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which are vital for proper bodily functions. According to Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, consuming alkaline water can offer several noteworthy health advantages.
Health Benefits of Alkaline Water
Experts note that alkaline water can provide relief to certain individuals suffering from acid reflux, a condition where stomach acid flows back up into the food pipe. Minerals like magnesium help optimize various bodily processes, though ongoing research continues to explore these effects further. Because it contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium, it is suggested to support better bone density. Additionally, claims are often made that it possesses higher antioxidant properties than regular water.
How to Make Alkaline Water at Home Using Baking Soda
If you do not own an expensive machine or have access to pristine mountain streams, you can easily alkalinize ordinary water using baking soda. To do this, take one liter of water and mix in approximately one-eighth of a teaspoon, which equals about 1 pinch of baking soda. Stir the mixture thoroughly until the powder completely dissolves. Since baking soda is an alkaline substance, it successfully raises the pH level of the water. However, it does contain sodium, meaning individuals suffering from high blood pressure, kidney ailments, or heart conditions should avoid drinking it without consulting a physician first.
Making Alkaline Water with Lemon and Cucumber
Another alternative method involves using fresh lemon and cucumber slices. Take a fresh lemon and chop it into small pieces, then add those pieces to a liter of water and let it sit at room temperature for roughly 8 to 12 hours. Lemons contain vitamin C along with other essential nutrients. Although adding lemon may not necessarily increase the water's pH because lemon is acidic in nature, it enhances the flavor and makes the drink feel much more refreshing. Furthermore, dropping a few cucumber slices into the mix can increase nutrient levels such as calcium, manganese, and potassium in the water.
