Researchers at Columbia University in the United States examined what happens to body weight when an individual consistently cuts their daily slumber by approximately 80 to 90 minutes. In one phase, participants maintained their customary routine, getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night. In the alternate phase, participants were instructed to delay their bedtime by roughly 90 minutes each day to deliberately truncate their rest duration.
Throughout both testing cycles, researchers monitored the subjects' daily physical activity, body weight, waist circumference, and several other baseline wellness indicators. The findings revealed that during the reduced-sleep window, participants slept an average of around 80 minutes less per day. Consequently, this deprivation led to an average weight gain of approximately 450 grams, alongside a marked reduction in daily movement as participants became noticeably more sedentary.
