India's automotive manufacturing footprint has reached a significant international milestone as Maruti Suzuki surpassed the shipment of 100,000 Made-in-India vehicles to Japan. The export volume is driven by three distinct models: the Jimny 5-Door, the Fronx, and the fully electric eVitara. Gaining traction in the Japanese market represents a noteworthy validation for domestic production, given Japan's stringent vehicle standards and fiercely competitive domestic automotive landscape.
Japan Rises to Second-Largest Export Destination
Sustained consumer interest in these Indian-built models helped establish Japan as Maruti Suzuki's second-largest foreign shipment destination during the 2025-26 financial year. This momentum remained intact through the early stretch of the 2026-27 financial year, spanning April to August. The steady inflow of the Fronx, Jimny 5-Door, and eVitara was instrumental in making Suzuki Motor Corporation the leading vehicle importer in Japan.
During the 2025-26 fiscal period, vehicles manufactured by Maruti Suzuki accounted for nearly 100 percent of all automobiles imported into Japan by Suzuki. Achieving this level of market presence in a country known for exceptional quality benchmarks underscores the advancing maturity and technical competence of Indian assembly facilities.
Phased Rollout of Key Export Models
The company initiated its contemporary export push to Japan in August 2024 with the shipment of the Fronx crossover. This was followed a few months later in December 2024 by the introduction of the Jimny 5-Door. Expanding into alternative propulsion, Maruti Suzuki added its debut battery electric vehicle, the eVitara, to its Japanese export roster in September 2025.
Both the Jimny 5-Door and the eVitara are manufactured exclusively in India, transforming the country into an essential global production base within Suzuki's broader operational network. These vehicles have succeeded in meeting Japanese expectations regarding engineering standards, design, safety, and functionality, while delivering a compelling mix of equipment and value.
Worldwide Reach Across 120 Export Destinations
Remarking on the development, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, emphasized that this accomplishment offers undeniable proof of India's robust manufacturing capabilities. He noted that the adoption of Indian-assembled automobiles by Japanese buyers mirrors the expanding economic collaboration between India and Japan.
Maruti Suzuki continues to scale its international footprint, dispatching vehicles to approximately 120 countries through Suzuki's global distribution channels. Between April and August 2026 alone, the automaker shipped over 1.8 lakh units overseas. The brand has maintained its position as India's top passenger vehicle exporter continuously from the 2021-22 fiscal year through 2025-26, commanding a share of more than 50 percent of the nation's total passenger car exports.
