Daily routines often include starting the morning with a steaming cup of tea or coffee, but consuming these drinks at high temperatures could carry unsuspected health implications. A extensive investigation tracking nearly 9.8 lakh individuals across Britain over a 14-year period has identified a strong link between scalding beverage consumption and an increased risk of food pipe cancer. Conducted by Senior Nutritional Epidemiologist Dr Keren Papier at the University of Oxford, this major health study demonstrates that the temperature at which drinks are consumed, along with daily intake frequency, plays a critical role in esophageal tissue health.
Tripled Cancer Risk Linked to Scalding Temperatures
The Oxford research examined distinct categories of food pipe malignancies, discovering a strong vulnerability toward esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, widely known as SCC. Participants who consistently preferred their tea or coffee very hot faced nearly three times higher risk of developing SCC compared to individuals who drank warm beverages. Notably, the study found no statistical link between hot beverages and esophageal adenocarcinoma, another prevalent form of food pipe cancer. This distinction suggests that direct thermal stress uniquely affects the superficial cellular layers susceptible to squamous cell carcinoma.
Frequency of Hot Beverage Intake Matters
In addition to temperature, the study highlights how often individuals drink hot beverages throughout the day. Participants who consumed six or more hot drinks daily showed a 71 percent higher likelihood of developing esophageal SCC than those who consumed fewer than six hot beverages per day. Scientists point out that repeated heat exposure throughout the day compounds physical stress on esophageal tissues, aggravating the vulnerability of sensitive cellular linings over time.
Biological Mechanism of Heat Induced Injury
Health experts explain that drinking liquids at excessive heat levels inflicts repeated thermal burns on the delicate inner membrane of the esophagus. Sustained heat injuries trigger ongoing inflammation and cellular repair cycles, which over many years can contribute to cancerous transformations. Researchers emphasize that neither tea leaves nor coffee beans contain inherently harmful cancer causing substances. The primary danger stems entirely from physical heat damage. Meanwhile, traditional risk factors including tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption remain dominant drivers of esophageal cancer globally.
Practical Precautions and Expert Recommendations
Because beverage temperatures in the study were recorded using participant self classification into categories like very hot, hot, or warm rather than exact thermometer measurements, researchers did not establish a specific safe temperature degree limit. Providing perspective on the findings, Fiona Osgun, Health Information Lead at Cancer Research UK, clarified that coffee and tea lovers do not need to abandon their favorite drinks. Simply allowing freshly brewed hot drinks to cool down to a comfortable, non-scalding temperature for a few minutes before sipping effectively mitigates potential health risks while maintaining regular consumption habits.
