Residents across two dozen villages in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district have spent the last two months anxiously waiting for their essential mail, unaware that their crucial documents were sitting in a towering pile just miles away. Authorities have uncovered a shocking case of negligence involving a local postal worker who systematically hoarded roughly 800 pieces of undelivered post inside his rented accommodation instead of distributing them to the intended recipients.
Highly Sensitive Documents Withheld
The hidden stash, which had been accumulating over a span of two months, contained highly sensitive and important deliveries. According to postal department officials, the recovered items included government-issued Aadhar cards, banking ATM cards, PAN cards, and vital employment call letters. The failure to deliver these documents has potentially caused significant disruption for the residents of the affected areas, who depend on the postal service for their financial transactions and professional correspondence.
How the Negligence Was Uncovered
The matter officially came to light following a surge in grievances from locals who repeatedly complained about severe delays and missing deliveries. Acting on these mounting complaints, a postal inspector visited the Karot branch, which operates under the Bhaleth sub-post office, on July 16 to conduct a routine check. During the verification process, the inspector noticed that several parcels and letters were officially marked as being on hold in the branch records.
To cross-check the official logs, the inspector proactively contacted the intended recipients by phone. The responses immediately raised red flags. Many individuals confirmed they had never received their packages. Meanwhile, a few others reported that while they did eventually get their mail, the delivery person had completely bypassed the standard protocol of obtaining receiving signatures. This glaring discrepancy prompted higher authorities to take immediate physical action and thoroughly inspect the living quarters of the accused staff member.
Immediate Suspension and Recovery Efforts
The accused worker, identified as Sahil, who originally hails from Haryana, had been tasked with the significant responsibility of covering the postal routes for approximately 20 villages in the region. However, an initial probe indicated a pattern of severe dereliction of duty. Investigators found that Sahil would collect the daily postal bags from the main office, deliver only a tiny fraction of the letters to a select few houses, and then dump the remaining bulk in his private room.
KS Chauhan, the Senior Superintendent of the Hamirpur postal division, confirmed the grim findings of the recent raid. The senior official detailed that the massive two-month backlog discovered in the room consisted of 600 ordinary letters alongside 200 registered post items. Following the discovery of this massive breach of duty, the postal department instantly suspended the worker and initiated a comprehensive formal inquiry into his conduct. Simultaneously, officials have launched a special, fast-tracked drive to urgently distribute all 800 recovered documents to their rightful owners to mitigate any further inconvenience.
