A major political confrontation has erupted in Himachal Pradesh after aggressive exchanges occurred during a recent meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee, commonly known as the DISHA committee, in Mandi. Reacting strongly to the stance taken by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut during the proceedings, the Sukhu-led state administration mounted a direct offensive against her political conduct. Principal Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, Naresh Chauhan, heavily criticized the Mandi parliamentarian, describing her public demeanor as inconsistent with the dignity required of an elected representative.
DISHA Meeting Controversy and Media Advisor's Critique
Addressing the media regarding the incidents at the DISHA committee meeting, Naresh Chauhan stated that the public decorum displayed by Kangana Ranaut fell far short of parliamentary standards. He pointed out that her repeated involvement in public disputes and verbal altercations clearly reflects a lack of experience in the political arena. Chauhan remarked that the Mandi lawmaker primarily belongs to the film industry and was forcibly thrust into politics rather than arriving through sustained public service. He described it as unfortunate for the people of Mandi and the broader state of Himachal Pradesh that she represents them in Parliament, asserting that her continuous controversies have negatively impacted the state's public image and caused distress to her local constituency.
MPLAD Funds and Administrative Coordination
Responding to questions raised by Kangana Ranaut concerning the alleged non-utilization and allocation of Member of Parliament Local Area Development funds, Chauhan stated that every parliamentarian possesses the legitimate authority to question administrative functioning and point out gaps in development schemes. However, he argued that such governance discussions require structured administrative coordination rather than public outbursts aimed at media attention. He stressed that official meetings are intended for scheme-by-scheme evaluations conducted in consultation with department heads.
Chauhan explained that the appropriate administrative course would have been to directly query officials regarding specific execution failures within each individual welfare program. The MP should have examined the precise administrative levels at which bottlenecks occurred, identified the underlying structural or procedural causes, and worked constructively to devise practical solutions. Characterizing her confrontational methods as a deliberate publicity stunt, Chauhan urged the Mandi representative to adopt a civilized, professional, and positive posture when dealing with public servants during official reviews.
CAG Report and Calls for Party Funding Oversight
On the political front, Chauhan tackled allegations leveled by opposition leaders regarding observations contained in the Comptroller and Auditor General report. He noted that annual CAG reports routinely feature audit objections, procedural remarks, and operational queries across various government departments under all administrations. Questioning the long-term financial management of past governments, Chauhan stated that current fiscal challenges stem from historical decisions. He reassured that if the latest CAG findings highlight specific deficiencies or legacy lapses that require systemic fixes, the Sukhu administration will take firm and appropriate remedial action.
Additionally, Chauhan directed attention toward transparency in political funding, referring to unconfirmed claims circulating across social media networks and independent video channels regarding donations received by political organizations. He emphasized that if the allegations concerning political contributions carry any truth, they represent a critical issue of national importance demanding a comprehensive probe. Chauhan advocated for establishing a high-level committee through Parliament or under the supervision of the Supreme Court to ensure total accountability in political party finances, while acknowledging that social media assertions regarding party funding remain independently unverified.
Role of Opposition and Hydroelectric Power Rights
Chauhan also countered recent statements made by Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, who had declared that a future opposition government would review all major decisions taken during the current administration's five-year tenure. Chauhan stated that the duty of an opposition leader extends well beyond routine criticism of the state government. He urged the opposition to uphold its democratic responsibility toward the public by providing constructive policy inputs and contributing positively toward state development. He added that when elections arrive, the electorate of Himachal Pradesh will independently evaluate performance and decide which leadership truly worked in the public interest.
Furthermore, Chauhan highlighted the proactive efforts of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in safeguarding state interests before the Central Government. He cited ongoing advocacy regarding the Bhakra Beas Management Board, state share allocations, and major power project agreements. Criticizing agreements finalized during the previous BJP government under Jairam Thakur, Chauhan alleged that past leaders compromised Himachal Pradesh's financial and natural resource rights.
