Nahan Witnesses Harmony as Locals Shower Flowers Days After Clash Injured 14

Following a violent clash in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, communities resolved their differences to peacefully take out a traditional Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti procession while showering flowers on each other.

A remarkable display of communal harmony unfolded in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, where locals replaced stones with flowers just days after a violent confrontation rattled the city. Following clashes on Friday, a grand religious procession for Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti was successfully carried out along its traditional route on Sunday. This peaceful turnaround was made possible after local administration and a legislator mediated talks, leading both communities to acknowledge past mistakes, unite, and march together while showering petals on one another.

Roots of the Dispute and Route Resolution

The tension in Sirmour district's Nahan erupted last Friday between the Valmiki and Sikh communities, resulting in heavy stone-pelting that left nearly 14 people injured, including a Station House Officer and several police personnel. After multiple rounds of meetings between administration officials and locals on Saturday, authorities initially considered altering the route of the procession. However, residents of Nahan's Gobindgarh locality were determined to preserve their centuries-old tradition. A breakthrough arrived when youngsters from the Sikh community put forward a constructive proposal, paving the way for a settlement. As part of the resolution, the Sikh community agreed to repair the damage caused at Valmiki Chowk, clearing the path for Sunday's procession.

Escalation of Violence During the Clash

The unrest began on October 22 when a clash broke out over the installation of a welcome gate near Valmiki Chowk on the main road leading toward Delhi Gate. Residents of the Gobindgarh area attempted to set up the gate, which faced strong opposition from residents of the Valmiki Basti. According to Sirmour Superintendent of Police Nischit Singh Negi, quoted by PTI, individuals from both sides attacked each other using bricks, stones, and glass bottles.

Attack on Official Vehicles and Traffic Disruption

SP Negi noted that when the Tehsildar of Nahan arrived at the scene to broker peace between the groups, an agitated crowd blocked the official vehicle and attacked it with stones and sticks, causing extensive damage. The violence injured 14 people in total, including Nahan Sadar police station in-charge Kulbir Singh and two other police officers. The chaos also disrupted traffic on National Highway-907A, causing a massive traffic jam that lasted for about three hours and stretched vehicle queues to nearly five kilometers. Police subsequently registered cases under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
