Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon recently opened up about her career trajectory and the types of roles she wants to pursue next. During her appearance on Kareena Kapoor Khan's popular chat show What Women Want, the actress discussed her early days in the industry, the constraints of her initial image, and the shifting dynamics of character writing in contemporary cinema. She expressed a strong desire to move beyond traditional wholesome characters and experiment with darker shades on screen.
Early Struggles and Limited Choices
Reflecting on her entry into the film industry with her 2014 debut in Heropanti, the actress noted that a newcomer does not immediately receive an abundance of extraordinary scripts. During the initial phase of her career, options were quite restricted, leaving her with no choice but to pick the best possible alternative from the limited offers that came her way.
Breaking Free from the Good Girl Stereotype
Describing the repetitive nature of her early assignments, she pointed out that for a long period, female characters were predominantly written through a male gaze as quintessential good girls who were shy, timid, and always in need of saving by a hero. Playing these conventional roles consistently has left her ready for a change, as she feels exhausted by constantly portraying the ideal virtuous woman on screen.
The Shift Towards Realistic Characters
Highlighting the positive evolution happening within the entertainment industry today, she observed that filmmakers are increasingly focusing on writing realistic and human characters for women rather than just sticking to conventional archetypes. This changing landscape has inspired her to take on more complex, grey, and negative roles that offer greater depth as a performer.
A 12-Year Journey in Cinema
Spanning a career of approximately 12 years, the actress has consistently demonstrated her acting prowess across various diverse projects. She notably earned a National Award for her stellar performance in Mimi and has been a part of several commercially successful films such as Bareilly Ki Barfi, Dilwale, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, and Crew. Most recently, her performance and glamorous look in Cocktail 2, directed by Homi Adajania, garnered significant attention and appreciation from audiences and critics alike.
