Heavy monsoon rain has triggered flash floods across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, forcing Union Home Minister Amit Shah to step in and review the situation. Shah spoke with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah about the ground response and assured the Centre's full support for ongoing relief and rescue efforts.
Rajouri and Poonch worst hit
The flash floods have caused the most damage in the Rajouri and Poonch districts. LG Manoj Sinha reviewed the situation in both districts and ordered officials to begin immediate relief work for affected residents.
Omar Abdullah personally monitoring the crisis
CM Omar Abdullah has been personally tracking the flood situation in Rajouri and has pledged full support for the affected residents. "Safeguard precious lives," he said as rescue efforts continued in the region.
Control room in Katra as both pilgrimages halted
A control room has been set up in Katra to manage disaster response through the monsoon season. The Vaishno Devi Yatra remains suspended because of adverse weather, leaving many devotees disappointed, while the Amarnath Yatra has also been temporarily halted on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes following a weather alert.
More rain ahead, but relief for Delhi
The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the monsoon will intensify further across North and Northeast India in the coming days, even as Delhi heads into a cooler week.
Separate accident in Uttarakhand
In a separate incident, two people were injured in Nainital, Uttarakhand, after their car plunged into a gorge. The State Disaster Response Force reached the spot and rescued the passengers.
Centre's continued focus on flood preparedness
According to news reports, this is not the first time Shah has reviewed the situation this monsoon, he had also reviewed the J&K rain situation on July 8, 2026, and assured central help then as well. LG Manoj Sinha had also called on Shah on June 12, 2026. Earlier, in May, Shah had said that around 60 lakes across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and other states would get early-warning systems to help manage flood risk. In April 2026, Shah had also travelled to Ladakh for the Buddha Relics Exposition.
