Clean, soft and glowing skin doesn't come from washing your face alone. Regular scrubbing matters just as much, because it lifts away the dead cells and grime sitting on the skin's surface and lets the pores breathe. The market is full of scrubs, but they tend to be expensive and often contain chemicals that don't suit every skin type. Homemade scrubs, by comparison, are cheaper and gentler, since their natural ingredients are far less likely to harm the skin. Here are six easy recipes you can put together with things already in your kitchen.
1. Sugar and Honey
Sugar is a natural exfoliator that easily sloughs off dead skin cells, while honey moisturises the skin at the same time and keeps it from drying out. Together they clean and hydrate in a single step.
Mix 1 teaspoon of sugar with 1 teaspoon of honey and massage the blend gently onto your face for 2–3 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water afterwards.
2. Besan, Curd and Turmeric
Besan (gram flour) helps draw out the dirt trapped in the skin, curd makes the face softer, and turmeric adds to the glow.
Make a thick paste by mixing 2 teaspoons of besan with 1 teaspoon of curd and a little turmeric. Rub it gently over your face and wash it off after about 5 minutes.
3. Coffee and Coconut Oil
Coffee helps tighten the skin and boosts blood circulation in the face, leaving it looking more alive.
Combine 1 teaspoon of coffee powder with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and massage it onto your face in light circular motions. Wash your face after a while.
4. Oatmeal and Milk
Oatmeal is considered excellent for sensitive skin because it cleanses without causing irritation.
Grind some oats, add a little milk and make a paste. Scrubbing your face with this paste leaves the skin feeling clean and soft.
5. Tomato and Sugar
The antioxidants in tomato help brighten the skin, while the sugar takes care of the exfoliation.
Sprinkle a little sugar on a slice of tomato and rub it gently over your face. This remedy is effective at removing tan.
6. Lemon and Honey
The vitamin C in lemon brightens the skin, while honey keeps it moisturised.
Mix honey into lemon juice and massage it gently onto your face. Keep one thing in mind, though — people with sensitive skin should use lemon sparingly.
Things to Keep in Mind While Scrubbing
- Scrub only 1–2 times a week; scrubbing every day can end up harming your skin.
- Rubbing too hard can cause irritation, so always massage with a light hand.
- Don't forget to apply a moisturiser after scrubbing so the skin retains its moisture.
- If you have pimples or existing irritation on your face, be cautious before scrubbing.
