On Sunday, June 28, the earthly remains of celebrated actor and filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj were accorded full ceremonial State honours.

N. Anand, who holds the Water Resources and Rural Development portfolio, and Rajmohan, Minister for School Education, Tamil Development, and Information and Publicity, were both on hand throughout the funeral proceedings.

Through the previous night and well into the morning, a steady procession of prominent names from the entertainment industry and political circles arrived to offer their tributes. Those who came to pay their respects included Suresh Gopi, Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism, along with directors Atlee, Vetrimaaran, and Lingusamy, and film actors Mammootty, Nayanthara, Trisha, Keerthy Suresh, and Soori.

The last journey of acclaimed actor and director K. Bhagyaraj is now under way, as his earthly remains are being carried in a procession toward the Besant Nagar crematorium.

Bhagyaraj, who died at 73 on June 27, 2026, was both the writer and director of the film, drawing his creative spark from a shelved MGR project that had never made it to cinemas.

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed profound sorrow over Bhagyaraj's death, stating that the filmmaker had left an indelible mark on Indian cinema through his memorable works, his distinctive narrative voice, and his exceptional screenwriting. He noted that Bhagyaraj's pioneering approach to crafting scripts — particularly his ability to present intricate stories in a way that was both accessible and captivating — had earned him recognition as one of the greatest screenwriters the country had produced. Posting on X, he wrote that while Bhagyaraj's loss was something Indian cinema could never truly recover from, his enduring legacy would go on inspiring artists and film lovers for years to come.

Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin arrived at the late filmmaker's residence to offer his condolences and pay his final respects to Bhagyaraj.

Actor Sarathkumar described the news as a profound shock, recalling that he had been conversing with K. Bhagyaraj just two days earlier at the wedding of Khushbu's daughter. He said the loss of such a dear family friend had left him and his loved ones devastated. Sarathkumar described Bhagyaraj — widely hailed as the 'king of screenplay' — as someone who had carved a permanent place in the hearts of audiences through a string of timeless films.
