Air travel is poised to become more expensive as India's largest airline, IndiGo, announced a hike in fuel surcharges across its domestic and international flight network on Monday. The decision comes in response to steep increases in jet fuel costs. These revised charges are scheduled to take effect from October 6, directly pushing up ticket prices for flyers across various routes.
Distance-Linked Surcharge for Domestic Routes
According to an official statement issued by the carrier, the quantum of the surcharge hike for domestic flights will depend on the travel distance. For domestic sectors, passengers will see an additional charge ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 350 per ticket. Surcharges on international services have also been revised upward, ensuring that the adjustment applies across the carrier's broader global route operations.
Surging Aviation Turbine Fuel Expenses
The primary driver behind this adjustment is the sharp and sustained rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. IndiGo noted that ongoing price increases, which recently saw a month-on-month surge exceeding 14 per cent, have pushed jet fuel expenses to levels ranking among the highest recorded over the past decade. The airline highlighted that ATF constitutes a major portion of airline operating costs, making such steep price increases particularly impactful.
Impact on Airline Operating Economics
The carrier explained that elevated fuel prices place significant strain on airline cost structures and network economics, including its own operational balance. Given the heavy weight that fuel carries in flight operations, running services without adjusting fare components became financially unsustainable. Consequently, IndiGo stated that it has marginally re-calibrated its fuel charges across domestic and international services to counter the cost pressures.
