Global foreign exchange markets witnessed nuanced price action following the release of the latest flash Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) survey results across major European economies. The EUR/GBP currency cross held near the 0.8561 level, navigating divergent economic signals between the Eurozone and the United Kingdom. While British services expansion helped underpin Sterling, mixed manufacturing and services figures from Germany prevented the Euro from establishing clear upward momentum. Concurrently, geopolitical news from the Middle East added another layer of sentiment to international trading desks.
Eurozone and UK Flash PMI Signals Diverge
Activity metrics across the Eurozone pointed to complex underlying conditions. The composite PMI for the Eurozone rose to a nine-month peak, primarily fueled by a sharp rebound in German manufacturing. German factory activity climbed to its highest point in over four years, exceeding market projections. However, this upside was offset by a contraction in the German services sector, where the index dipped below the pivotal 50 mark that separates growth from shrinkage. This contraction in services limited Euro buying interest.
Across the Channel, the United Kingdom registered a stronger-than-expected composite PMI beat, largely propelled by sustained expansion in its services economy. Although UK manufacturing growth moderated slightly, the outcome aligned closely with consensus forecasts. Market participants largely looked past weaker UK retail sales figures, allowing the British Pound to maintain a stable footing against major peers.
EUR/GBP Technical Structure and Critical Support Zone
On the technical front, EUR/GBP's 4-hour chart shows price action consolidating near 0.8561 after fluctuating around 0.8563. Resistance remains firmly anchored around the 20-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 0.8566 and the Exponential Moving Average (EMA20) at 0.8557. Additional overhead supply is anticipated near 0.8571 and 0.8576, alongside technical pivot resistance levels at 0.8573 (R1) and 0.8585 (R2).
On the downside, initial support rests at the 100-period SMA around 0.8559 and the horizontal pivot near 0.8564. A sustained breach below this zone could expose secondary support levels at 0.8552 (S1) and 0.8542 (S2). Momentum indicators remain largely balanced: the 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovering near 49 to 51 reflects neutral momentum, pointing toward range-bound consolidation rather than an immediate directional breakout.
Broader Foreign Exchange Movements and Gold Rally
In broader FX markets, GBP/USD touched a multi-month high above 1.3670, its strongest level since February, before pulling back below 1.3650 as the Greenback stabilized. Despite the intraday retracement, the British currency remains positioned to secure its second straight week of gains. Meanwhile, EUR/USD retreated below 1.1700 following earlier strength in European trading hours, as solid private sector business activity metrics offered support to the US Dollar.
In commodities, Gold (XAU/USD) posted notable gains during American trading hours, briefly surging past $4,600 per ounce to mark its highest valuation since May 15. Spot prices subsequently entered a consolidation phase near the upper end of the intraday range.
Cryptocurrency Surge and US Treasury Liquidity Operations
Digital assets traded with a firm bid, led by Bitcoin (BTC) breaking past the $77,000 milestone. Alternative cryptocurrencies mirrored the positive risk sentiment, with Ethereum (ETH) exchanging hands near $2,400 and Ripple (XRP) holding around $1.35.
In sovereign debt markets, the US Treasury Department adjusted its scheduled buyback parameters. In an update released at 12:32 GMT, official sources confirmed that liquidity support buyback operations for 10-year to 20-year and 20-year to 30-year maturities would be doubled. The maximum purchase cap per operation will rise from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, taking effect from September 9 through November 4. Looking ahead, market participants are keeping a close watch on Kevin Warsh's upcoming debut at Jackson Hole as well as Nvidia's corporate earnings announcement for further direction.
