A fresh wave of political uncertainty triggered by the US midterm election results has pushed the greenback lower across global foreign exchange markets. A strong performance by the Democratic Party initially weighed on currency sentiment, prompting an early slide before stabilizing Nasdaq futures helped pare some of those losses. While the broader US economy remains resilient and bets on further monetary tightening linger, political realignment in Washington has injected fresh volatility into asset pricing.
Policy Friction and ING Outlook Through 2027
ING analysts James Knightley, Carsten Brzeski, Padhraic Garvey, Lynn Song, and Chris Turner pointed out that although the Dollar has somewhat recovered from early Asian lows when Nasdaq futures plunged, the currency faces prolonged headwinds. The research team noted that resilient economic growth alongside expectations of at least one more interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve provides an underlying cushion. Nevertheless, institutional friction could gradually erode that support over the coming year.
According to the analysts, policy resistance could expand through 2027 if a bolstered Democratic caucus actively challenges Republican initiatives, particularly around deregulation and the expansive build-out of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Adding to these structural risks is the looming threat of an extended federal government shutdown in mid-2027, which could undermine currency stability by next summer. Amid these shifts, the team maintains its forecast targeting a 10-year US Treasury yield of 5.25%.
Currency Crosses: Yen Surges as Australian Dollar Holds Steady
Heightened political tension and declining government debt yields prompted significant defensive portfolio adjustments across Asian trading desks on Wednesday. In particular, USD/JPY experienced pronounced downward pressure, breaching below 158.00 as the greenback dropped to a one-month low. The prospect of sustained institutional gridlock fueled safe-haven flows into the Japanese currency, while lower Treasury yields undermined dollar rate advantages.
Concurrently, the AUD/USD pair held its ground above a recent two-week floor, changing hands near 0.6965 during the Asian trading session. The combination of election ambiguity and easing bond yields eroded rate-hike optimism for the Federal Reserve, creating an opening for the Australian currency. However, broader gains for the Aussie were restricted by a comparatively less hawkish policy stance maintained by the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Precious Metals Rally as Gold Reclaims $4,000
The commodity complex reacted swiftly to the weakening dollar and softening yield environment. Gold snapped a two-day losing streak on Wednesday, mounting a decisive rebound that carried bullion back above the key threshold of $4,000 per troy ounce. Market participants noted that lower crude oil prices, coupled with shrinking yields across US sovereign paper and a retrenchment in the greenback, provided an ideal environment for precious metals to attract fresh hedging capital.
Cryptocurrency Complex Rebounds Alongside Risk Appetite
Digital assets also tracked the positive turn in risk sentiment across broader capital markets. Bitcoin climbed firmly above $78,000 on Wednesday, reflecting improved trading appetite among crypto participants. The positive trajectory broadened into alternative tokens as well, with Ethereum mirroring the bellwether's recovery path to hover comfortably above $2,300. In addition, Ripple changed hands above $1.28, cementing two consecutive trading days of steady upside momentum.
