Hong Kong recorded a substantial acceleration in economic expansion during the third quarter of 2026, outperforming broad market expectations on the back of extraordinary momentum in external trade and domestic capital spending. The turnaround has been underpinned by robust global demand across semiconductor and AI supply chains, accompanied by positive momentum in inbound tourism and a stabilizing local real estate market. Reflecting these broad-based strengths, UOB economist Ho Woei Chen raised the institution's economic growth projections for Hong Kong across 2026 and 2027, while pointing out that external vulnerabilities and financial market risks continue to warrant caution.
Third-Quarter Expansion Surpasses Market Projections
Official performance figures reveal that Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) climbed to an annual rate of 5.2% in the third quarter of 2026. This performance marks a clear step up from the revised 4.2% expansion logged in the second quarter. The acceleration comfortably exceeded general market expectations, standing well ahead of the Bloomberg consensus estimate of 3.7% as well as UOB's baseline projection of 3.0%. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter measurement, the economic output expanded by 1.9%, staging a sharp rebound after contracting by 0.7% in the preceding three-month period.
Capital Formation and Export Growth Anchor the Momentum
The primary driver behind the third-quarter outperformance was an extraordinary surge in merchandise shipments, with goods exports posting an annual increase of 30.4%. Much of this momentum was supported by vital positioning within high-technology supply chains, particularly the elevated demand for semiconductors and infrastructure related to artificial intelligence. Complementing export performance, gross domestic fixed capital formation advanced 7.3% year on year, highlighting an improved appetite for business investments and physical assets. Meanwhile, private consumption maintained a steady footing with an annual increase of 2.8%, and government consumption expenditure showed signs of improvement, growing by 1.7% over the previous year.
Retail Sector Extends Unbroken Growth Streak
This steady flow of economic activity offered ongoing support to domestic commerce, helping the retail market sustain its protracted path of recovery. While the overall pace of expansion moderated slightly, total retail sales value still registered its 17th consecutive month of positive annual growth through September. Sustained spending from local residents alongside climbing tourist arrivals helped keep merchant cash flows steady. Although UOB has factored these favorable trends into higher GDP forecasts for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, the bank emphasized that external environment risks and broader financial uncertainties remain key variables to monitor.
Currency and Commodity Shifts Follow US Midterm Vote Counts
The global macroeconomic backdrop witnessed sharp movements across major financial assets on Wednesday as market participants digested preliminary results from the US midterm elections. The Australian Dollar staged a decisive rally against the Greenback, with the AUD/USD currency pair pushing back above the pivotal 0.7000 threshold. This move effectively erased two consecutive days of declines, taking advantage of a widespread retrenchment in the US Dollar as political clarity remained elusive.
Dollar Sinks Against Yen While Gold Breaks Past $4,000
Concurrently, the Japanese Yen gained significant ground as the US Dollar faced pronounced selling pressure throughout Asian trading hours. The USD/JPY cross fell below the 158.00 level, pulling the US currency to a one-month low. Worries regarding potential legislative gridlock in Washington channeled capital into defensive, safe-haven assets. This political uncertainty pushed US government bond yields lower across the maturity curve, compounding the downward pressure on the dollar. Taking full advantage of the dollar's retreat, lower sovereign bond yields, and softening crude oil prices, spot gold broke its two-day losing streak, reclaiming ground above the milestone of $4,000 per troy ounce.
