Indian headline indices kicked off Thursday's session on a subdued note, supported by early accumulation across technology and port counters despite indifferent signals from international markets. Trading remained confined to a tight band right from the opening bell. The BSE Sensex advanced by a marginal 40.72 points, or 0.06 percent, to start at 73,286.75. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty 50 traded higher by 3.05 points, representing a fractional rise of 0.01 percent, hovering around 22,701.90 during the initial minutes.
Market breadth painted a balanced picture across the exchange. Advancing shares numbered around 1,190, while 1,035 counters traded lower under mild selling pressure. Another 155 stocks remained completely unchanged, indicating a tentative approach by market participants after the volatility seen in recent trading sessions.
Mixed Movements Across Industry Indices
Sector-specific indices displayed contrasting trends throughout the early minutes. Technology shares led the positive momentum, lifting the Nifty IT index by 0.84 percent to touch 31,819.00. State-owned lenders also witnessed steady demand, allowing the Nifty PSU Bank gauge to rise 0.41 percent. Moderate buying was seen in the Nifty Media index, which rose 0.20 percent, while both Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare managed slight gains of 0.05 percent each.
Conversely, profit-taking emerged across heavy manufacturing and consumer-facing segments. Both the Nifty Chemical and Nifty Cement sectors surrendered 0.62 percent each. Industrial commodities and mobility stocks also suffered losses, with the Nifty Metal gauge declining 0.47 percent and Nifty Auto slipping 0.38 percent. The heavyweight banking and consumer goods spaces saw cautious trading, as the Nifty Bank drifted 0.10 percent lower and Nifty FMCG shed 0.22 percent.
Top Movers and Heavyweight Performers
Key index heavyweights prevented broader market benchmarks from tumbling into negative territory. Adani Ports emerged as the day's leading gainer, climbing 2.08 percent to trade at ₹1,798.00. IT giant TCS posted a noticeable gain of 1.54 percent, changing hands at ₹2,498.00. Other prominent gainers included BSE rising 1.15 percent, Bharti Airtel advancing 0.99 percent, and Power Grid adding 0.95 percent. Technology peers Infosys gained 0.83 percent, HCL Tech picked up 0.66 percent, and Tech Mahindra moved up 0.61 percent.
On the losing side, retail and automobile majors bore the brunt of opening declines. Trent slipped 1.51 percent to ₹2,870.00, leading the drop among large caps. Maruti Suzuki fell 0.94 percent, followed by Hindalco down 0.90 percent, and banking leader HDFC Bank declining 0.89 percent. Other stocks under selling pressure included Bajaj Finance shedding 0.59 percent, ONGC dropping 0.52 percent, and Eicher Motors down 0.42 percent.
Outlook for the Rest of the Session
Despite broader international uncertainty, domestic infrastructure and technology counters continue to demonstrate resilience. The remainder of the trading day is expected to take its cues from forthcoming corporate earnings releases, institutional capital flows from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), and market volatility tied to the expiry of futures and options contracts.
