The Japanese Yen has advanced following mounting expectations that the Bank of Japan will implement a rate hike in September, supported by two consecutive months of accelerating inflation figures. This shift in monetary policy expectations has provided fresh momentum to the Japanese currency against its major counterparts.
US Treasury Actions and Bond Yield Pressures
The US Dollar faced downward pressure after the Treasury Department announced an unexpected move to at least double its buyback operations for longer-dated government debt. Designed to curb surging bond yields, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that these buybacks could expand beyond $4 billion to signal that elevated yields do not accurately reflect underlying economic fundamentals.
Geopolitical Tensions and Safe-Haven Demand
Despite the Greenback's weakness, downside room remains cushioned due to rising safe-haven demand stemming from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed impending US sanctions as an act of desperation, while Iranian Security Chief Mohsen Rezaei warned of severe retaliation should further actions be taken by US President Donald Trump.
Technical Indicators and Moving Averages
On the daily chart, USD/JPY trades at 158.80, maintaining a bearish near-term bias as prices remain positioned below key moving averages. The nine-period Exponential Moving Average and the 50-period EMA act as overhead resistance barriers. Meanwhile, the 14-day Relative Strength Index sits at 42.67 below the midline, pointing toward subdued bullish momentum rather than oversold extremes.
Resistance Levels and Currency Dynamics
Immediate resistance on the topside is located near the nine-period EMA around 159.03, with additional supply expected around 160.13 near the 50-period EMA. As one of the most traded currencies globally, the Yen's valuation is deeply tied to the Bank of Japan's policy adjustments, interest rate differentials with the United States, and broader risk sentiment across international financial markets.
