Financial markets are recalibrating expectations for Sweden's monetary policy as the Riksbank signals further rate adjustments ahead. An analysis from Nomura indicates that policy rates are poised to trend higher over the coming year if macroeconomic indicators and price trends continue along the central bank's projected path. This trajectory closely mirrors the official policy rate forecast established in September, highlighting a persistent commitment to managing long-term inflation dynamics while global currency and debt markets process shifting political developments in Washington.
Inflation Dynamics and CPIF Projections
The core of this policy outlook rests on the anticipated path of Swedish consumer price index inflation with a fixed interest rate, known as CPIF. Projections show CPIF inflation averaging 1.8 percent year-on-year across the first quarter of 2027. However, price pressures are forecasted to accelerate noticeably in the second quarter of 2027, climbing to 2.6 percent. This sharp acceleration is primarily attributed to base effects resulting from the April 2026 policy decision to halve value-added tax on food products. As the initial disinflationary impact of that tax cut washes out of annual calculations, year-on-year readings are expected to climb, pushing monetary officials toward a firmer stance.
Projected Rate Hike Schedule and Execution Risks
The September policy projections place the probability of a 25-basis-point increase in February at approximately 50 percent, provided the central bank keeps borrowing costs steady during its December meeting. Beyond that point, the benchmark projection anticipates a gradual climb across 2027, eventually reaching a terminal peak of 2.43 percent in the first quarter of 2028.
Nomura notes that significant timing risks surround these projected moves. The two rate hikes anticipated after November could be pushed back to March and June, representing a one-month delay compared to baseline models. Such an adjustment would allow policymakers to thoroughly evaluate underlying inflationary pressures during comprehensive forecast rounds. Furthermore, consecutive back-to-back interest rate hikes in November and December 2026 appear improbable, given that general price pressures remain largely contained within manageable bounds.
Currency Fluctuations Across Global Desks
Foreign exchange markets reflected pronounced volatility during Wednesday trading sessions. The AUD/USD pair held steady above a two-week trough, hovering around 0.6965 during Asian trading hours as preliminary midterm election returns injected deep political uncertainty, pulling down the US Dollar. A simultaneous revival in safe-haven appetite sparked a downward leg in US government bond yields, dampening expectations surrounding aggressive Federal Reserve hikes and compounding downside pressure on the greenback. Upside potential for the Australian Dollar remained checked, however, by a comparatively less hawkish tone from the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Selling pressure extended directly into USD/JPY, which slid underneath the 158.00 mark during Asian trading. The drop pushed the dollar to a one-month low as investors reacted to early vote counts. Expectations of legislative gridlock in Washington channeled capital toward defensive positions, suppressing Treasury yields and undermining dollar valuations across multiple major currency pairs.
Precious Metals Rally Alongside Digital Assets
Gold capitalized directly on broad-based weakness in the US Dollar, extending an intraday climb and marking fresh weekly highs. Bullion traded near the $4,050 level during early European business, drawing sustained momentum from macro developments. Gains by Democrats across both the House and Senate increased the likelihood of a divided legislature, prompting institutional capital to migrate into traditional hedges. This sustained flight to safety exerted persistent downward pressure on yields, creating a supportive climate for bullion.
Risk-oriented corners of the market also showed resilient performance, with the broader cryptocurrency complex staging a recovery. Bitcoin changed hands above the $78,000 threshold on Wednesday as general market sentiment strengthened. Ethereum reflected this positive momentum, holding firmly above $2,300. Ripple sustained its upward path as well, trading beyond $1.28 and securing two consecutive sessions of gains.
Private Employment Data in Focus
Attention across international trading desks is shifting toward private-sector hiring metrics, with the Automatic Data Processing Research Institute scheduled to publish its October employment release on Wednesday. Economists anticipate a moderate deceleration in private payroll additions. Consensus forecasts project the ADP report to show 69,000 new private-sector positions created in October, reflecting a notable step down from the 90,000 jobs reported in September.
