Following a decline logged during Monday's session, market participants continued to trade cautiously from the opening bell. The BSE benchmark slid 0.21 percent at open, while the National Stock Exchange's 50-share barometer began operations with a 0.15 percent decline.
Opening Numbers for Headline Indices
Right at the start of trades, the BSE Sensex contracted by 162.53 points to open at 75,970.28, drifting beneath the 76,000 benchmark. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty 50 retreated by 36.05 points to initiate its session at 23,743.10. The subdued launch follows downward pressure experienced across the board in the previous session on Monday.
Market Breadth Tilts Decisively Toward Bears
Trading breadth across the premier indices reflected sharp selling interest during early exchange. Out of the 30 constituent stocks that comprise the Sensex, a mere 4 issues managed to open in positive territory, leaving 26 counters languishing in the red. Across the broader Nifty 50 gauge, only 11 components commenced trading in green territory, whereas 39 constituent stocks began the day with declines.
Top Advancers and Decliners at the Bell
Among the handful of gainers on the Sensex, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) led the leader board, advancing 0.82 percent at the opening tick. On the opposite side of the ledger, private lending major Axis Bank emerged as the biggest lag, shedding 0.87 percent as trading commenced.
Stocks Holding Green Territory
Beyond BEL, positive traction on the Sensex was confined to just three other counters. Eternal started its trading day with an appreciation of 0.81 percent. Financial services giant Bajaj Finserv picked up 0.25 percent at the open, while steelmaker Tata Steel posted a slight gain of 0.08 percent.
Extensive Losses Across Key Heavyweights
Early selling pressure cut across major industrial sectors, including automobiles, information technology, consumer staples, and banking. Automobile manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra opened lower by 0.66 percent, while IT services firm Tech Mahindra shed 0.63 percent and power producer NTPC declined 0.62 percent. Telecom major Bharti Airtel fell 0.59 percent, and private lender ICICI Bank retreated 0.56 percent.
Energy conglomerate Reliance Industries conceded 0.55 percent, while private banking heavyweight HDFC Bank slipped 0.51 percent. Healthcare company Sun Pharma lost 0.50 percent, and consumer goods giant Hindustan Unilever gave up 0.33 percent. Within the technology basket, HCL Tech declined 0.31 percent, TCS conceded 0.20 percent, and Infosys dipped 0.06 percent. Aviation operator IndiGo along with conglomerate ITC each retreated 0.30 percent. Public sector lender State Bank of India (SBI) eased 0.29 percent, while transmission giant Power Grid slipped 0.28 percent. Non-banking financial firm Bajaj Finance traded 0.26 percent lower, and Kotak Mahindra Bank shed 0.09 percent. Infrastructure builder L&T, paint maker Asian Paints, and retail chain Trent each dropped 0.25 percent. Logistics major Adani Ports and consumer firm Titan declined 0.20 percent and 0.19 percent respectively, matching a 0.19 percent decline in UltraTech Cement and a 0.08 percent slip in automaker Maruti Suzuki.
